Job description

Chief Development Officer

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is an executive leader responsible for building and executing a comprehensive fundraising strategy that grows contributed revenue and advances Boys & Girls Clubs of Snohomish County's (BGCSC) mission. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and serving as a member of the Executive Team, the CDO leads the Resource Development Department, strengthens a culture of philanthropy across the organization, and partners closely with the Board of Directors, donors, and community stakeholders.

A key priority for this role is to enable BGCSC to provide excellent programming at an affordable price for Snohomish County families. The CDO will do this by expanding major gifts, legacy/endowment giving, and corporate, foundation, and government support.

Essential Functions

  • Enterprise Fundraising Strategy
    • Lead development strategy, planning, forecasting, and performance management across all fundraising streams, aligning goals with BGCSC's strategic plan and budget.
    • Partner with the CEO and Executive Team to integrate philanthropy into organizational strategy, ensure strong internal coordination, and communicate impact to stakeholders.
    • Establish and monitor KPIs (pipeline health, donor retention, solicitation activity, stewardship timeliness, event ROI, grant win rates), using data to drive decisions.
    • Champion donor-centered fundraising, ethical standards, and compliance with applicable regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Create a culture of philanthropy by building shared ownership of donor relationships and elevating fundraising best practices across departments and Clubs.

Major Gifts

  • Personally manage and grow a portfolio of major and principal gift prospects and donors, with responsibility for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding gifts, including $1M+ commitments.
  • Build a disciplined moves-management approach including prospect qualification, strategy, proposal development, solicitation planning, and coordinated follow-up.
  • Partner with the CEO and Board leadership on high-level relationship management and solicitations, including preparing briefings, call plans, and meeting support.
  • Ensure consistent, high-quality stewardship: impact reporting, recognition strategy, renewal planning, and meaningful engagement opportunities.

Legacy and Endowment Giving

  • Build and execute a legacy giving strategy that supports long-term sustainability, including endowment growth and bequest commitments.
  • Develop clear pathways for donors to give in a variety of ways (including stock, donor-advised funds, qualified charitable distributions, and other planned giving vehicles as appropriate), in partnership with finance and legal counsel as needed.
  • Create marketing and stewardship approaches for legacy donors, including legacy society strategy, recognition, and ongoing engagement.
  • Ensure internal policies, gift acceptance practices, and cross-functional workflows support non-cash gifts and planned giving.

People Leadership and Department Management

  • Lead, coach, and provide strategic oversight to a multi-functional resource development team of eight individuals within the following workstreams:
    • Development operations and data
    • Individual giving
    • Corporate and institutional giving
    • Tribal giving
    • Events
    • Government grants and grant administration
    • Life and workforce readiness
  • Create clarity of roles, goals, and performance expectations.
  • Foster collaboration across sub-teams and with Program and Operations leaders.
  • Recruit, retain, and develop talent while building individual development and succession plans.
  • Develop and manage the resource development budget, ensuring efficient allocation of time and resources to maximize net revenue and mission impact.
  • Model inclusive, mission-driven leadership within the Resource Development Department and across BGCSC.

Board of Directors

  • Partner with the CEO to activate and support Board fundraising engagement.
  • Support the Board's resource development efforts through timely reporting, prospect strategy, and clear meeting materials.
  • Engage volunteer leaders and ambassadors to expand BGCSC's reach and credibility across Snohomish County.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive nonprofit fundraising leadership, including responsibility for strategy, revenue outcomes, and team management.
  • Demonstrated success securing major gifts, including experience closing and stewarding gifts at the $1M+ level.
  • Experience building or leading legacy giving/planned giving and/or endowment strategies (including non-cash giving approaches such as stock, donor-advised funds, and similar vehicles).
  • Proven ability to lead and coach a multi-disciplinary development team (major gifts, annual giving, grants, events, operations/data).
  • Strong executive presence and ability to build trust with CEOs, board members, senior corporate leaders, and philanthropic partners.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate program outcomes into compelling cases for support.
  • Commitment to BGCSC's mission and to creating safe, inclusive environments for youth and families.

Preferred

  • Experience in youth development, out-of-school-time, education, or similar mission-driven organizations; familiarity with Boys & Girls Clubs and/or club-based program models.
  • Campaign readiness and/or capital campaign experience (feasibility, case development, leadership gifts, and campaign operations).
  • Experience partnering closely with finance on revenue forecasting, gift acceptance, and audit-ready documentation for restricted funds.
  • Experience implementing or improving a fundraising CRM system and development operations infrastructure. Experience with Raiser's Edge is helpful.
  • Knowledge of the Snohomish County and greater Washington philanthropic and corporate landscape.

Core Competencies

  • Strategic leadership and execution discipline; able to set direction and drive measurable results.
  • High relational intelligence; comfortable initiating and sustaining relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong solicitation skills, including crafting donor-aligned proposals and demonstrated ability to make clear, direct, and successful asks.
  • Analytical and systems-oriented; uses data to prioritize and improve performance.
  • Collaborative and grounded; builds trust across programs, operations, and finance.
  • Sound judgment, integrity, and confidentiality with sensitive donor information.

Work Environment

This position is based in Snohomish County, Washington, with a hybrid work schedule. Regular in-person presence is expected for donor meetings, community events, leadership activities, and collaboration with BGCSC staff and volunteers. Evening and weekend work may be required periodically based on event and donor schedules.

Physical Requirements

This section describes the physical and sensory requirements needed to perform the essential functions of this role, with or without reasonable accommodation. BGCSC will provide reasonable accommodations in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local law.

  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods, including viewing a screen, using a keyboard/mouse, and using common office and virtual meeting technology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in person, by phone, and via email/virtual platforms.
  • Ability to attend meetings and events at BGCSC locations and in the community, including navigating typical office, meeting, and event environments.
  • Ability to travel locally and regionally on a regular basis (and occasionally nationally) to meet with donors, partners, and stakeholders using personal or public transportation.
  • Ability to occasionally move and/or lift materials commonly used in meetings or events (e.g., boxes of materials, signage, or supplies), generally up to 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: $135,000 - $165,000

Benefits: BGCSC offers an excellent benefits package, which includes:

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Retirement plan with employer contribution
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Wellness programs to support work-life balance
