About the Role

The Controller is a senior strategic leader responsible for strengthening MLT's financial infrastructure and ensuring excellence across all accounting and financial operations. This role oversees the full scope of accounting functions for MLT's $30M+ portfolio including general ledger management, accounts payable and receivable, payroll compliance, grant and fund accounting, treasury, reporting, and financial compliance while driving process improvements and ensuring year-round audit readiness. In this position, you will lead, coach, and develop a high-performing Finance team, partnering closely with the CFO, program leaders, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver accurate, timely financial insights that advance MLT's mission and support strategic decision-making. The ideal candidate brings a balance of precision, strategic insight, operational leadership, and a solutions-oriented mindset. Success in this role requires deep technical expertise in nonprofit accounting, a commitment to integrity, and the ability to translate complex financial data into clear guidance for diverse audiences.

What You'll Do

  • Lead all daily accounting activities, including general ledger oversight, accounts payable and receivable, payroll compliance, fixed assets, and cash management.
  • Oversee and execute the monthly close, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Manage annual audits and tax filings, serving as the primary liaison with external auditors.
  • Oversee grant and fund accounting, ensuring compliance with restrictions and preparing required reports.
  • Analyze and reconcile revenue, deferred revenue, and receivables; distribute revenue reports and support internal inquiries.
  • Strengthen internal controls and improve financial processes, systems, and reporting capabilities.
  • Support treasury functions, investment tracking, and banking relationships alongside the CFO.
  • Lead key operational improvement initiatives, including enhancements to the accounting system, expense, travel, and payables platforms.
  • Manage, coach, and develop the Finance team to ensure high performance and accountability.
  • Support special projects and strategic financial analysis as needed.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

What You Have

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; Master's degree preferred. CPA strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including nonprofit leadership roles.
  • Demonstrated expertise in GAAP, nonprofit fund and grant accounting, and federal grant/contract compliance.
  • Proven success managing audits, month-end close processes, financial reporting, and tax compliance.
  • Experience leading accounting teams responsible for full-cycle GL, AP, AR, and payroll.
  • Proficiency in financial systems and tools (e.g., QuickBooks, Salesforce, Excel); familiarity with cash reconciliation platforms like Stripe and MobileCause a plus.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to translate complex data into clear insights and guidance.
  • Exceptional attention to detail paired with strategic thinking and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially when explaining financial matters to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive process improvements, manage multiple projects, and collaborate across teams.
  • High integrity, sound judgment, and a solutions-oriented mindset aligned with MLT's mission and growth trajectory.
  • Commitment to staying current on nonprofit accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
