Job description
Senior Mechanical Engineer
Position Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design, development, testing, and optimization of complex mechanical, opto-mechanical, and electro-mechanical products. This individual will serve as the primary Mechanical Engineer at our facility and will have significant ownership of product design, engineering analysis, supplier collaboration, and manufacturing support.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys solving complex technical challenges, and is comfortable working independently while partnering closely with cross-functional teams including Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Product Development.
Key Responsibilities
Product Design & Development
  • Lead the design and development of complex mechanical, opto-mechanical, and electro-mechanical systems from concept through production.
  • Design sophisticated injection-molded plastic components utilizing advanced SolidWorks modeling techniques, including complex surfacing.
  • Partner with mold manufacturers throughout tooling development, incorporating design feedback, evaluating sample parts, and approving final production components.
  • Design sheet metal components and assemblies with a strong understanding of manufacturing capabilities and process limitations.
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analyses to ensure robust product performance and manufacturability.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles throughout the product development process.
  • Support rapid prototyping efforts utilizing 3D printing and other prototype fabrication methods.
Engineering Analysis & Testing
  • Utilize FEA tools to analyze structural, thermal, and mechanical performance and optimize product designs.
  • Conduct engineering studies including test planning, protocol development, execution, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Design and execute Design of Experiments (DOE) to validate performance and improve product reliability.
  • Present engineering findings and recommendations to project teams and leadership.
Documentation & Configuration Management
  • Create and maintain detailed part and assembly drawings in accordance with ASME Y14.5 and GD&T standards.
  • Manage engineering documentation, CAD models, revisions, and releases within SolidWorks PDM and SharePoint environments.
  • Create, review, and maintain technical documentation, engineering reports, and design records.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Lead and participate in design reviews throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with suppliers, manufacturing partners, and internal stakeholders to improve product performance and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Provide engineering support for production issues related to component design, assembly processes, and manufacturing operations.
  • Train manufacturing personnel on assembly methods and best practices for mechanical and optical systems.
Continuous Improvement
  • Drive product improvements through root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and design enhancements.
  • Support regulatory compliance efforts and product validation activities as required.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 5+ years of mechanical product development experience.
  • Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks for part modeling, assemblies, and drawing creation.
  • Experience with SolidWorks PDM or equivalent product data management systems.
  • Demonstrated experience designing injection-molded plastic components and working directly with tooling and mold manufacturers.
  • Strong understanding of thermal analysis, mechanical analysis, and tolerance stack-up methodologies.
  • Experience applying Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience using SharePoint for document control and engineering collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with optical or micro-optical systems.
  • Creo experience.
  • Experience with 3D printing and rapid prototyping technologies.
  • Experience designing regulated products, including medical devices.
  • Knowledge of IEC 60601-1 and IEC 60601-2 standards.
  • Experience supporting products through verification, validation, and regulatory compliance processes.
  • Familiarity with electro-mechanical systems and precision assemblies.
What Success Looks Like
  • Owns mechanical engineering activities for multiple product development programs.
  • Successfully transitions designs from concept to manufacturing with minimal rework.
  • Builds strong supplier relationships and drives successful tooling and production launches.
  • Delivers innovative, manufacturable, and cost-effective designs that meet customer and business requirements.
  • Serves as the go-to mechanical engineering resource for the organization.
