Description

At Asplundh Electrical Testing, safety is the foundation of everything we do. Our Assistant Relay Test Technicians play a critical role in supporting the safe and reliable operation of high‑voltage substations by assisting with relay testing, commissioning, and maintenance under the guidance of experienced technicians. This role provides exceptional hands‑on training and exposure to protection systems, giving you the opportunity to grow into advanced technical responsibilities within a strong culture of safety, integrity, and service.

We are growing and actively hiring motivated individuals who are eager to learn, develop technical skills, and contribute to high‑quality field operations. If you’re excited about starting your career in power systems, working outdoors, and becoming part of a team committed to excellence, we encourage you to apply.

As a NETA‑accredited independent electrical testing and engineering organization, Asplundh Electrical Testing sets the benchmark for technical accuracy and safety across the utility, renewable energy, data center, and industrial sectors.

Candidates responding to this posting must independently possess eligibility to work in the United States, for any employer, at the date of hire. This position is ineligible for employment Visa sponsorship.

ROLE SUMMARY

As an Assistant Relay Test Technician with Asplundh Electrical Testing, you will support the testing, commissioning, and maintenance of protective relays and control systems within electrical substations. Under the guidance of senior technicians, you will learn industry‑standard testing practices, relay logic, and protection scheme fundamentals. This role is ideal for individuals beginning their career in power systems who are eager to expand technical capabilities while working in a safety‑driven, team‑focused environment.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL

  • Ability to read and understand one‑line diagrams, three‑line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, and control drawings.
  • Foundational understanding of electrical theory, phasing, polarity, vectors, and basic logic gates.
  • Aptitude for troubleshooting control circuits and assisting with functional, end‑to‑end, and commissioning tests.
  • Familiarity with relay test software (Doble ProTest, Protection Suite, or similar) preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and commitment to safe work practices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, take direction, and grow technical proficiency over time.
  • Willingness to travel for project assignments and work overtime when required.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to pass a pre‑employment drug screen and background check.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 70 lbs., climb ladders, and work on your feet for extended periods.

Work will be performed at customer sites throughout the assigned region. Ability to travel regularly within the region is required, and the capability to travel outside the region for extended assignments is ideal.

HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT

  • Perform entry‑level testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of protective relay and control equipment in transmission and distribution substations.
  • Assist with installation, calibration, and functional testing of microprocessor‑based relays.
  • Learn to develop relay test routines, macros, and test plans for Overcurrent, Transformer, Bus Differential, and Distance protection schemes.
  • Support end‑to‑end testing, system commissioning, and equipment energization under supervision.
  • Examine and understand protection schemes, logic diagrams, and scheme operation principles.
  • Participate in troubleshooting activities for distribution and transmission protection systems.
  • Utilize test equipment and software to verify proper relay performance and compliance with design standards.
  • Uphold Asplundh’s safety culture by following all policies, procedures, and industry best practices.
  • Provide accurate documentation, test results, and field notes to support project close‑out requirements.

EDUCATION & CREDENTIALS

  • Associate degree or bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline preferred.
  • Equivalent amount of education, training and/or military training in electrical systems strongly considered (Journeyman, Apprentice Electrician, US Army Prime Power School, US Navy Nuclear Electrician Program, etc).
  • NETA certification (Level I or II) is a plus but not required for entry‑level.
  • Hands-on experience with substations, relay testing, or high-voltage equipment, acquired through educational, vocational, or military experience, is required.
