Job description

The Area Coordinator (AC) is a full-time, live-in professional staff member responsible for providing direct supervision, leadership, and community oversight for residential communities housing approximately 400–800 students. This position carries direct supervisory authority over Resident Assistants within assigned communities and directly supervises Graduate Hall Coordinators, including full responsibility for performance management, training, selection, and evaluation across both staff groups. The Area Coordinator serves as a designated conduct hearing officer for the Dean of Students Office, receiving case assignments, conducting hearings, determining responsibility, and assigning sanctions in accordance with university policy and the Student Code of Conduct. The AC participates in a shared on-call rotation with Graduate Hall Coordinators, collaborates with campus partners to support student success and crisis response, and advances the mission and goals of Housing and Residence Life and Barry University.

1. Resident Assistant Supervision and Professional Development

• Carry direct supervisory authority over Resident Assistants within assigned residential communities, including day-to-day oversight, performance management, accountability, and corrective action.

• Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with Resident Assistants to discuss resident concerns, community trends, performance expectations, and professional development goals.

• Facilitate regular staff meetings and provide ongoing training, coaching, mentorship, and developmental feedback.

• Oversee the RA selection, onboarding, training, and evaluation processes for assigned communities in coordination with the Associate Director for Residence Education.

• Review RA duty reports, incident reports, programming submissions, and administrative documentation for accuracy and compliance with departmental expectations.

• Foster a culture of accountability, student-centered service, and professional

growth among RA staff.

• Identify high-performing RAs and provide intentional developmental support to prepare them for graduate-level roles consistent with the department’s professional pipeline model.

2. Graduate Hall Coordinator Supervision and Development

• Directly supervise Graduate Hall Coordinators within assigned communities, including scheduling, performance oversight, professional development, and corrective action.

• Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with GHCs to discuss operational priorities, staff performance, community trends, and professional development goals.

• Provide oversight and accountability for GHC-administered functions including health and safety inspections, Desk Assistant supervision, incident documentation, and programmatic support activities.

• Review GHC documentation, reports, and administrative submissions for accuracy and completeness.

• Support GHC professional formation consistent with the department’s graduate pipeline model.

3. Conduct Administration as Designated Hearing Officer

• Serve as a designated conduct hearing officer for the Dean of Students Office; receive case assignments, conduct hearings, determine responsibility, and assign educational sanctions in accordance with university policy and the Student Code of Conduct.

• Maintain accurate and timely case documentation and communicate outcomes to the Dean of Students Office in accordance with established procedures.

• Monitor completion of assigned sanctions and conduct appropriate follow-up with students.

• Consult with the Dean of Students Office, the Coordinator for Student Conduct and Community Standards, and the Associate Director for Residence Education regarding complex behavioral matters and students requiring additional intervention.

• Educate residents proactively regarding community standards, personal responsibility, and expectations for residential living.

• Identify students exhibiting concerning behaviors and coordinate referrals through established university behavioral intervention processes.

4. Student Success, Crisis Response, and Case Management

• Meet with students experiencing academic, behavioral, mental health, social, or personal concerns and provide appropriate intervention, support, and referral.

• Serve as the primary case manager for students of concern within assigned communities, coordinating referrals to Counseling Services, Academic Advising, and other campus support resources.

• Provide oversight and guidance for roommate conflicts requiring professional-level intervention beyond GHC-facilitated mediation.

• Maintain thorough documentation of student interactions, referrals, action plans, and follow-up efforts.

• Participate in behavioral intervention and student support processes as appropriate.

• Collaborate with campus partners to support student retention, persistence, well-being, and academic success.

5. On-Call Duty Rotation and Emergency Response

• Participate in a shared on-call rotation with Graduate Hall Coordinators, serving as the on-call staff responder for all residential communities during assigned duty periods.

• Respond to emergencies including medical incidents, mental health crises, policy violations, facilities emergencies, and student welfare concerns during assigned on-call periods.

• Assess situations, implement appropriate response protocols, and provide direction to Resident Assistants and other student staff during emergency situations.

• Escalate situations beyond the scope of on-call authority to Senior Housing Staff, the Coordinator for Student Conduct and Community Standards, the Associate Director for Residence Education, or the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students as appropriate.

• Complete incident documentation and communicate critical information to departmental leadership in a timely manner.

• Serve as essential personnel during hurricanes, severe weather events, public health emergencies, and other university-declared emergencies.

6. Residential Operations Oversight

• Provide supervisory oversight for the day-to-day residential operations of assigned communities through the supervision of Graduate Hall Coordinators.

• Review GHC-completed health and safety inspection reports, facility walkthroughs, and administrative documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness, and appropriate follow-up.

• Facilitate individual room swaps at the community level and communicate all room change information to the Associate Director for Business Operations for system processing; the AC does not manage occupancy data, billing, or the housing assignment system.

• Collaborate with Facilities Management to address maintenance concerns and safety issues requiring professional staff coordination.

• Assist with residence hall openings, closings, break housing, and other large-scale departmental initiatives as directed.

• Ensure compliance with university policies, departmental procedures, and risk management expectations within assigned communities.

The Area Coordinator is a full-time, 12-month, live-in professional position and a key member of the Housing and Residence Life leadership team. The AC carries direct supervisory authority over Resident Assistants and Graduate Hall Coordinators within assigned communities and is responsible for the full range of supervisory functions including hiring recommendations, performance evaluation, corrective action, and professional development. The AC serves as a designated conduct hearing officer for the Dean of Students Office and receives case assignments through that office; all conduct work is conducted within the Dean of Students framework and not as an independent departmental system. The AC participates in a shared on-call rotation with Graduate Hall Coordinators on an equal basis; when a situation exceeds the on-call staff member’s scope of authority, escalation proceeds to Senior Housing Staff, then to the Coordinator for Student Conduct and Community Standards, then to the Associate Director for Residence Education, and ultimately to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students. Room change requests are facilitated at the community level and routed to the Associate Director for Business Operations for all system processing and occupancy management; the AC does not manage housing data, billing, or the housing assignment system. The AC reports to the Associate Director for Residence Education and also receives work assignments from the Director of Housing and Residence Life, the Associate Director for Business Operations, and the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students as appropriate. Evening and weekend work is regularly required.

Qualifications:

Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling or related field.

3-5 years previous work experience.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Benefits: Barry University offers a comprehensive benefits package to full-time employees that includes health, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement, tuition assistance, paid time off and work/life balance initiatives such as wellness programs, spirituality in the workplace, and training and development.
