Project Engineer

Project Engineer (Junior Level)

This junior-level Project Engineer role offers a direct path into project management within a specialty concrete construction environment. You will support the project management team with all construction documentation and coordination activities while gaining hands-on experience both in the office and in the field. This position is ideal for someone with foundational construction experience who is eager to learn, grow, and develop into a Project Manager with structured training and mentorship.

Responsibilities

• Support Project Managers by preparing, managing, and tracking all construction documents for active projects.
• Create, process, and monitor Requests for Information (RFIs) to ensure timely clarification of project details and issues.
• Coordinate, review, and log submittals, ensuring they align with project specifications and are delivered to relevant stakeholders on schedule.
• Assist with preparing, issuing, and tracking change orders, including gathering supporting documentation and updating project records.
• Help with project estimation activities by reviewing plans, quantities, and specifications to support accurate cost projections.
• Read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings to support project planning, coordination, and execution.
• Collaborate with field teams to help move projects forward, including site visits and on-site coordination as needed.
• Use project management software to maintain accurate project documentation, logs, and status updates.
• Support commercial construction and concrete restoration/replacement projects through coordination, scheduling assistance, and document control.
• Communicate with internal teams, subcontractors, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth project execution and timely resolution of issues.
• Participate in training and mentorship activities designed to develop your skills and prepare you for a Project Manager role.

Essential Skills

• At least 1 year of experience in construction, or equivalent experience through strong construction-related internships.
• Foundational knowledge of construction management principles and practices.
• Experience with construction documents, including RFIs, submittals, and change orders.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings.
• Familiarity with commercial construction projects.
• Experience in project coordination or project engineering support roles.
• Basic understanding of estimating processes in construction.
• Ability to use project management software to track and manage project information.
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail for managing multiple documents and tasks.
• Effective communication skills for working with project managers, field staff, and other stakeholders.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience or exposure to concrete construction, concrete restoration, or concrete replacement projects is a plus but not required.
• Prior experience working with Project Manager software tools or construction management platforms.
• Coursework or training in construction management, engineering, or a related field.
• Demonstrated interest in progressing into a Project Manager role.
• Ability to adapt to both office and field environments and manage tasks in a dynamic project setting.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to learning and taking on new responsibilities.

Work Environment

You will work in a hybrid environment that includes both office and field settings, supporting active construction projects from planning through execution. In the office, you will use project management software and digital tools to manage RFIs, submittals, change orders, and other construction documents. In the field, you will collaborate with project managers and site teams to help move projects along and gain direct exposure to concrete restoration and replacement work. The role follows typical construction project hours, with schedules aligned to project needs and milestones. You will operate in a professional construction environment where safety, communication, and teamwork are essential.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Windsor Mill, MD.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
