Position Summary

To be responsible for administering quality healthcare through practice and game coverage, injury prevention, evaluation, management, treatment of new and pre-existing injuries, short & long-term rehabilitation of athletic injuries, education and counseling of student-athletes, athletics- related health care administration and ensure compliance with NCAA legislation, the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer, and Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine.

The Certified Athletic Trainer is the primary person to make decisions on the playing status of all athletes. The Certified Athletic Trainer is accountable for the daily maintenance of the athletic training room and related equipment and supplies. The employee must understand and embrace the mission of Catholic higher education and must commit to the mission, goals and objectives of Holy Family University in word and deed.

Essential Functions

Job duties that must be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, and may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. This job description is illustrative and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents in this position.

  • Provide athletic training coverage at all assigned games, events, and practices. This includes providing first aid care and acting in a first responder capacity as necessary.Primary sport assignments for this role would include men’s lacrosse and men’s basketball. Ability to travel with men’s lacrosse is required.
  • Assist the Head Athletic Trainer with planning, organizing, and directing the use of the athletic training clinics for care and treatment of student-athletes. This includes the enforcement of all applicable athletic training related policies and procedures.
  • Provide appropriate HIPAA compliant communication regarding medical conditions to the Head Athletic Trainer and members of the athletic department staff.
  • Verifying all necessary aspects of pre-participation paperwork and maintaining complete and accurate records of all services provided and all athletic injuries on applicable injury tracking software.
  • Assist student-athletes to safely return to activity after injuries. This includes evaluating acute and chronic athletic related injuries, creating individualized treatment and rehabilitation protocols for the management of acute and chronic sports-related injuries.
  • Work collaboratively with the sports performance staff and coaching staff to ensure all safe and health environment for the student athletes.
  • Coordinate care with the team physician and make referrals to other members of the healthcare team as necessary.
  • Review secondary insurance information and claims
  • Remain current with research in sports medicine and related fields and commit to use of evidence-based practice in order to provide a high level of care to support the student athlete experience.
  • Maintain daily upkeep of the athletic training room to comply with healthcare setting standards, including HIPAA and OSHA standards.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of supplies and place orders as needed with approval of the Head Athletic Trainer.
  • Site supervision as assigned

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in athletic training required. Master’s degree preferred
  • Athletic training experience in the collegiate setting preferred
  • Previous experience with men’s or boy’s lacrosse is preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to perform comprehensive injury evaluations, develop treatment and rehabilitation protocols using evidence-based medicine, advanced knowledge of anatomy and physiology, generation of inventory reports, proficiency in injury tracking software and documentation of injuries.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow university policies and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the campus community.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations from applicable governing bodies, such as the NCAA, the Board of Certification, the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine/State Board of Osteopathic Medicine, as well as applicable laws/acts such as Title IX, HIPAA, and FERPA.
  • Game day management and best practices
  • Must have sound independent judgment and ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population.
  • Excellent attention to detail, problem solving, analytical, communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Understanding of organizational processes and strong follow-up skills.
  • Must demonstrate good time management and project management skills.
  • Ability to travel with the men’s lacrosse team is required.

Work Environment

Operates in an office environment, that may have frequent interruptions. The area is well-lit, temperature controlled and free from hazards. Noise level is can vary from quiet to loud throughout the course of a work day. The ability to work in an outdoor environment, including in elements such as wind, rain, and snow, in temperatures varying from 15°F to 100°+ F, is required.

Physical Requirements

Communicates frequently, in person, over the phone, or via a computer. Hearing is needed for extensive telephone and in person communication. Regularly required to sit or stand for long periods of time; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms. Manual dexterity is needed in order to operate a computer keyboard and provide multiple sessions of manual therapy throughout the course of a day. Operates standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. The ability to move safely yet swiftly (e.g., running/jogging, walking/jogging up and down stairs or hills) when necessary is required. The ability to lift 50+ pounds and physically assist injured parties in standing, sitting, or walking is required. The ability to handle physically strenuous tasks, such as providing emergency injury management (CPR, neck/spine stabilization) for prolonged periods of time.

Certification/Licensure

  • Current National Board of Certification Athletic Training Certification required
  • Current Pennsylvania Board of Medicine License in Athletic Training required
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certification

Other Important Information

  • Should teleworking become necessary, employee must be willing and able to perform all parts of this job description while working from home, on campus or a combination, and be proficient or willing to become proficient in the technology needed to work remotely.
  • Night and weekend availability is required.
  • Ability to drive a 15-passenger van is required
