Job description

Construction Estimator

The Construction Estimator position requires robust analytical and budgeting skills and is responsible for preparing accurate estimates for projects by gathering information and analyzing important metrics. The Construction Estimator should be able to assess the best prices for a project given the relevant variables and be able to collect and evaluate construction costs with a final goal of producing a budget or a contract bid. They will provide knowledge of costs and benefits that support profitable business decisions.

The ideal candidate will have a genuine interest in the construction and environmental remediation industry, strong relationship-building skills, excellent planning and management skills, and the ability to prioritize and lead others. A partner with the Project Manager to ensure the project is a success from the proposal stage to completion.

The salary range for this position is dependent on the level:

Level I: $86,189-$106,012 per year

Level Sr: $99,720-$123,652 per year

Level Chief: $124,117-$155,766 per year

This position is Telecommute eligible.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities All Levels (including but not limited to)

  • Be familiar with all of the project plans, specifications, addenda, bulletins, etc., that constitute the proposal or costing documents in order to prepare estimates.
  • Perform estimates at conceptual/schematic design to bid documents, as well as research subcontractors, suppliers, and new or improved construction materials to ensure estimates are prepared with the most competitive products and pricing available.
  • Travel to job sites to gather information on materials needed, labor required, and other factors in order to prepare estimates.
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates by analyzing plans and specifications and performing quantity take-offs for select trades. Identify and quantify cost factors, such as production time, materials, and labor expenses.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with subcontractors and suppliers to ensure competitive pricing.
  • Interact with clients, architects, engineers, and local Jurisdictions to understand and incorporate project objectives, schedules, permits, costs, etc.
  • Analyze worker means and methods to recommend solutions, such as improving production or implementing procedures where practical on a project to be more cost-effective and profitable.
  • Itemize scopes of work and definable features per trade to prepare bid packages. Develop subcontract interest per trade and assist in the request for proposal process.
  • Proficiency with online plan rooms such as iSqFt or other similar online subcontract solicitation tools is required.
  • Coordinate with the Project Manager to ensure the project is properly manned to meet project costs, schedules, and budgets. Properly turns over bid documents and sub-buyout information to Project Management.
  • Communicate estimate bid information to field operations at pre-construction meetings to ensure an understanding of the scope of the job.
  • Compliance with all company policies and procedures, adhering to company standards for training, safety, security, quality control, environmental compliance, and industrial relations.
  • Additional duties may include assisting in the management of a project, review of subcontractor and material submittals, assisting in the review of shop drawings for key materials, finalization of as-builts, turnover, and walk-throughs for equipment and material.

Level Specific Responsibilities:

Level - I

  • Execute takeoff in multiple CSI divisions (i.e., mechanical, electrical, plumbing)

Level - Senior

  • Execute takeoff in all CSI divisions (i.e., mechanical, electrical, plumbing, concrete, masonry, etc.)

Level - Chief

  • Execute takeoff in all CSI divisions (i.e., mechanical, electrical, plumbing, concrete, masonry, etc.)
  • Technical mentoring

Minimum Qualifications

All Levels

  • Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management or Engineering. Experience may be substituted for education on a 1:1 basis
  • Prior experience estimating construction projects in the federal market working for a General Contractor (GC) or large federal contract Prime Contractor. NOTE: Prior experience as an estimator for an A/E firm or prior experience estimating industrial or commercial construction may be considered.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Project, PDF Converter Professional, Bluebeam REVU, RSMeans, and local, state, and federal databases.
  • Broad knowledge of on-site commercial retail, industrial, and tenant improvement construction operations; carpentry, material take-off, and construction scheduling procedures; commercial building inspection and code enforcement procedures and practices.
  • Broad knowledge of Site Work, Commercial Steel Framing, Masonry, Concrete, Roofing, Drywall, Taping, Electrical, HVAC, Flooring, Painting, Doors, and Frames & Hardware.
  • Broad knowledge of civil work, translating to the ability to estimate environmental removal actions, construction of water treatment systems, construction of infiltration and collection trenches, pipelines, system controls, and other components of typical remediation systems.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment background, including criminal background and drug screen.
  • Adept at explaining technical aspects of fieldwork to internal and external clients verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain pleasant working relationships, perform multiple tasks simultaneously and uphold the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (Goggles, Hardhats, Safety Shoes, etc.)
  • Strong time management and task prioritization skills to ensure that administrative support is timely and short turnaround times are met for multiple projects.

Level - I

  • Three (3) to five (5) years of relevant working experience, specialized training, and/or an advanced degree such as MS may be substituted for work experience.

Level - Senior

  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of relevant working experience, specialized training, and/or an advanced degree such as MS may be substituted for work experience.

Level - Chief

  • Eight (8) or more years of relevant working experience, specialized training, and/or an advanced degree such as MS may be substituted for work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10 years of applicable experience providing cost estimates for a variety of projects.
  • Certified by the American Society of Professional Estimators.
  • Past federal experience as an estimator or similar field.
  • Experience and knowledge of Alaska Native Corporations.
