Job Description

We invite you to join our collaborative and innovative Service and Platform Management team within the University Enabling Technology Services (UETS) division of the Office of Information Technology (OIT). We are seeking an experienced team member to administer and support our varied cloud and on-premises service offerings.

As a System Administration Professional, you will be responsible for designing, installing, updating, and monitoring software applications and software application platforms that serve the academic and business functions of the university in accordance with organizational standards and architecture. Your role requires an analytical orientation and specialized knowledge to conceptualize solutions within a given framework. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a mission-driven organization where your work will directly impact productivity, collaboration, and the institution’s mission by providing secure, reliable, and efficient technologies.

Position Summary

Our ideal candidate has prior experience working with a variety of operating systems, applications, vendors, and end users to deliver superb services to the academy. You will utilize your expertise, including with both Windows and Linux Operating Systems, to ensure seamless integration, high availability, and optimal performance of our IT services. You will apply advanced technical knowledge across AWS Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) environments, working to script and automate complex operational stacks.

Responsibilities

  • Design, Implementation, and Monitoring: Design, install, update, tune, diagnose, monitor, and patch software applications and platforms, ensuring compliance with organizational, architecture, and cybersecurity standards. This includes defining, coordinating, and verifying system disaster recovery plans.

  • Service Delivery: Lead project work focused on the design and implementation of new services or major service upgrades across IaaS, or on-premises installations. Essential duties include planned support (regular patches/updates) and unplanned support (troubleshooting and diagnosis of production problems and vulnerability remediation).

  • Automation and IaaS Expertise: Work closely with application analysts/developers and cloud engineers to script and automate the network/machine/platform/application stack in the IaaS environment. Maintain expertise in IaaS tools and environments, providing technical leadership or consultation on service implementations.

  • IT Service Management: Understand, support, and contribute to the maturation of IT Service Management at the university, including managing changes, incidents, and problems, and maintaining accurate system documentation. Actively participate in team knowledge sharing sessions, including peer review of automation scripts and deployment strategies, to foster team expertise and ensure high service quality.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, application analyst/developers, campus partners, and team members in the deployment of new and upgraded services. May act as a project manager or technical lead as needed. Manage customer and software vendor interactions in cooperation with OIT colleagues.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), or a related field, or equivalent experience.

  • Experience: at least 3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and job experience in application administration or a related technical field.

  • Technical Skills Required:

    • Experience with Operating Systems, with 2-3+ years of experience in both Windows and Linux preferred (e.g., Red Hat Linux Server, AWS Linux, Microsoft Windows Server).

    • Demonstrated knowledge of the concepts and methods of operating system, application server, web server, database, firewall, and network architectural design.

    • Experience and working knowledge of IaaS tools and services (e.g., AWS and VMware tools).

    • Good working knowledge of scripting languages used to automate tasks, including the creation of the network/machine/platform/application stack.

    • Ability to document and communicate complex technical solutions (Linux environments, IaaS scripting) clearly, allowing for seamless handoffs and cooperative support within the team.

    • Experience and working knowledge using AI tooling to provide efficiencies and/or automation of work.

  • Professional Skills Required:

    • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to use persuasion and negotiation to build consensus and cooperation.

    • Demonstrated ability to use discretion and tact effectively with individuals at all levels of the University.

    • Ability to independently and creatively solve advanced problems, conceptualizing various possible solutions within a given framework.

    • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively as both a team member and technical lead in moderately complex projects, using negotiation and cooperation to build consensus and facilitate successful outcomes.

  • Other: ability to work in the United States, now or in the future, without visa sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical Depth: Familiarity with databases such as Oracle and SQL Server (RDS a plus). Familiarity with development languages (Java, Ruby, Python).

  • Organizational Knowledge: Experience in higher education or the public sector is a plus.
