Job description

Hall Advisor

This is a full-time LIVE-IN position in an on-campus residence hall. The hall advisor apartment may accommodate the hall advisor and his/her family (family is defined as hall advisor, spouse, and dependent children). Due to the nature of the position and the size of the hall advisor's apartment, applicants with more than TWO children will not be eligible for consideration. Children must be under the age of six.

Represent BYU and Residence Life in a professional and courteous manner as a live-in employee performing their normal employee and living activities in their employer provided apartment. Facilitate a pleasant, safe and clean atmosphere so residents can have positive academic, spiritual and social development.

What you'll do in this position:

Student and Community Development

  • As students live away from home in a community setting, they must learn to respect others' needs and expectations, voice their own expectations and concerns about community life, and resolve differences and conflicts peacefully. Hall advisors have a major responsibility for facilitating community development as part of this learning process. Hall advisors participate in extensive community development training to prepare to help communities develop. They learn about the role of the community in student development, natural community progression, developing healthy communities, and facilitating dialogue between individuals. Hall advisors also learn about community standards, a program developed to help residents learn to live in a healthy community. Throughout the year, residents meet in apartment, floor, and hall groups with the resident assistants to establish standards for their living community. Residents also develop goals for their community and establish ways to approach concerns about community life. Resident assistants teach residents about living in a community and act as facilitators in the community standards process. Hall advisors play a vital role by preparing R.A.s to facilitate community development, and by continuing to teach and support R.A.s throughout the process.

Student Behavior:

  • Hall advisors act as resources, coordinate services, meet with, and help mentor students with problems, concerns, and inappropriate behavior. Hall advisors have the responsibility to educate residents, schedule and attend interviews with students, work closely with area managers and directors to resolve student behavioral issues. Hall advisors also refer students to ecclesiastical leaders, Academic Advisement, the Counseling and Career Center, International Student Services, University Police, and the Honor Code Office.

Be available for consultation with individuals or groups of residents.

Use behavioral process when students are not in compliance with Housing Guidelines, University Policy, health or safety issues, and legal violations. The process includes:

  • Educating and mentor residents in private
  • Documenting violations for fair process compliance
  • Reporting violations to area managers
  • Involvement in Due Process student hearings
  • Referral to appropriate agencies and departments
  • Follow up with consequences

Understand the process of Community Standards and Student Development. Mentor communities to try and reach healthy communities through appropriate communication.

Teach correct principles of agency and Community Standards to residents through mentoring R.A. s, instruction in hall meetings and by example.

Learn and use the seven-step model for mediation with students in conflict. Mentor RAs in this process. Attend and help mediate roommate, floor and building conflicts.

Interpret and disseminate Housing Guidelines to residents.

Supervise Resident Assistants

Programming:

  • Hall advisors work closely with resident assistants, hall and floor council members, and train them in their roles. They continue to meet with these groups on a regular basis to advise them on how to provide events that meet student needs. Such programs might include Safety education, conflict resolution skills, relaxation techniques, test taking skills, missionary deferment, contract release information, meeting approved housing criteria, healthy relationships, declaring a major, campus resources, social events, etc.

1. Hire and train Resident Assistants in coordination with area management.

2. Coordinate schedule, calendaring, assignments and responsibilities for Resident Assistants.

3. Communicate regularly with Resident Assistants about specific resident concerns and problems.

4. Mentor Resident Assistants to learn the mission of Residence Life and BYU and connect them to their roles of Student Development, Community Development and Administrative Assignments
