Job description

Hospital Responder Coordinator, B.R.A.G. Cure Violence Bronx

We are looking for a dynamic and compassionate Hospital Responder Coordinator to join our team. The Hospital Responder Coordinator develops strong relationships with St. Barnabas Hospital staff, patients, and people in the neighborhood who are known to be or likely to be involved in gun violence, to learn about and mediate issues and conflicts with the goal of stopping escalation to gun violence. He/she will supervise hospital responder staff, must be comfortable in a hospital setting and on the streets when and where violence is likely to erupt, and must have and maintain the confidence of gang members and other perpetrators of violence.

Major Duties:

  • Responsible for managing the Hospital Response department and working closely with both the B.R.A.G. WEST, NORTH AND NORTHWEST staff and St. Barnabas and Jacobi Hospitals to reduce the possibility of retaliatory violence and the return of the victim to the hospitals.
  • Ensure that data is entered by staff daily. Analyze, review, draw inferences for strategic planning, and approve monthly reports on all hospital response outcomes, as specified in the contract deliverables.
  • Attend and represent at key stakeholder meetings. Provide presentations to promote hospital response work at St. Barnabas and Jacobi Hospitals.
  • Provide consistent supervision to staff. Review and approve time records. Assign required training, when necessary, both internal and external.
  • In the 46th, 47th and 52nd precincts, assist hospital responders in preventing retaliatory shootings by meeting with a shooting's victim and the victim's family in the hospital, or elsewhere, to calm the situation, providing mediation and assistance, including referral to any relevant support and mediation resources, and remaining in contact.
  • Oversee and/or maintain active risk loads of victims of violence for all B.R.A.G. programs due to guns/assaults while in the hospital. Approve and/or perform Admission Criteria Screenings for program entry.
  • Confirm frequent contacts by staff with victims from the 46th, 47th, and 52nd precincts on a monthly basis until discharge.
  • Assist staff in identifying high-risk individuals to connect them with B.R.A.G. Cure Violence programs, helping them rethink the impulse to act violently and redirect their lives in more positive directions.
  • Educate staff regarding victims' and family members' trauma and typical responses to trauma and chronic stress; Encourage victims to involve themselves in stopping the cycle of violence.
  • Verify staff home visits upon the release of the victim from the hospital if the victim lives within B.R.A.G.'s 46th, 47th and 52nd precincts' Catchment Areas, and the visit is warranted.
  • Provide feedback to Program Managers for B.R.A.G. on the hospital protocol and recommend improvements to enhance the program's quality and success.
  • Authorized program staff activities include a scheduled shift in the Emergency Department and/or responding in an "on-call" 24-hour capacity and canvassing the Catchment Areas of the 46th, 47th, and 52nd precincts as directed by supervisors.
  • Ensure that data on hospital calls and responses are kept up to date, and notify leadership of any significant trends.
  • Work with Violence Interrupter Supervisors to ensure coverage for shooting incidents and cover for staff if they are unable to respond due to absence.
  • Certify daily logs, which include hospital activations, interruptions, de-escalations, case notes, and referrals, in the B.R.A.G. Efforts To Outcomes (ETO)/Salesforce database.
  • Develop participant supports and linkages to community programs and opportunities (e.g., job programs, GED, substance use, and mentoring).
  • Conduct outreach to the St. Barnabas and Jacobi Hospitals (individually and as a team member) to build strong relationships with other stakeholders, youth, residents, businesses, and hospital staff.
  • Report to B.R.A.G. Program Managers and keep them informed of all relevant hospital activities.

Qualifications:

  • An in-depth knowledge of the Bronx 46th, 47th and 52nd Precinct neighborhoods.
  • Residence within the area and leadership skills are strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with hospital settings is a plus.
  • Ability to work with individuals and families in the midst of extreme crisis.
  • Experience and direct knowledge of at-risk youth and gang involvement.
  • The ideal candidate is someone very close to the streets, able to communicate effectively with gang members and other high-risk individuals, and capable of gaining the trust of the highest-risk individuals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer literate and able to enter notes and activities into databases via handheld devices and office computers.
  • Ability to work a highly flexible schedule that includes late evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to pass a drug screening.
  • Criminal justice history is preferred but may not be under current supervision.
  • Committed to working toward positive community change.
  • Commitment to work from a strength-based, trauma-informed youth and family development perspective.
  • A valid, clean NYS driver's license is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to use public transportation.
  • Ability to travel intensively, stand and walk for long periods, lift 25 lbs., bend, lift, and be otherwise physically active.
  • Bilingual Spanish-English & Patois a plus.
