Job description
Title: Peer Advisor (Juvenile Court and Community Schools) Location: San Diego, CA (In- person) Start Date: Monday, August 17th, 2026 Available positions: 2 Part Time positions (Central & South County San Diego) Hours: 20–30 hours per week 3-5 days per week During school hours Monday-Friday between 8:30am- 3:00pm Specific hours may vary depending on your assigned school site 1 Full Time Position (Central San Diego) Individuals must be comfortable working with incarcerated youth Hours: 35-40 hours per week 5 days per week Monday-Friday between 8:30am- 5:00pm Are you looking to make a real difference in your community? NCRF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational enhancement organization well known for hosting The Black College Expo in seventeen different cities across the United States, as well as a variety of other programs geared toward providing a positive impact. Our mission is to curtail the high school dropout rate and increase degree and/or certificate enrollment among underserved, underrepresented, at risk, low resource, homeless and foster students. NCRF's vision is to close the gap in educational achievement, workforce and economic disparities. About the Role- We are The Movement! Peer Advisors for TMEP work with elementary, middle, and high school students to improve their academic performance, while guiding them towards positive post-secondary pursuits. What sets this program apart from most other educational initiatives is what we call “comprehensive intervention,” which includes, most notably, onsite, and holistic in-class support for students. This approach includes, but is not limited to, mentoring, academic tutoring, socioemotional support and college and career planning. In San Diego, Peer Advisors for The Movement provide in-class and 1-1 support for students within the Juvenile Court and Community Schools (JCCS). JCCS is an alternative schooling program for school-age youth who are either wards of the court or have been referred by social services, probation, or one of the 42 school districts in San Diego County. The student demographic expands to youth who are incarcerated, pregnant or parenting, in foster care, expelled, chronically truant, in drug treatment centers and group homes for neglected or abused children, and experiencing homelessness. Key Responsibilities: Academic Support (40%) – Provide personalized academic advising in subjects such as Algebra, Geometry, Biology, Chemistry, and English. Adapt instruction to each student’s learning style and needs. Mentorship & Behavioral Support (40%) – Promote positive classroom behavior and help students develop life and coping skills for success beyond school. Data Tracking (10%) – Maintain accurate weekly records of student interactions and progress. Workshop Development & Facilitation (5%) – Design and lead engaging workshops that build cultural awareness, professional skills, and community involvement. College & Career Planning (5%) – Guide students through exploring postsecondary options including college, trade schools, employment, and internships. Required Qualifications Passion for working with underserved and underrepresented student populations. Bachelor's degree or Associate’s degree; or currently enrolled to obtain a college degree. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. Ability to: work both independently and collaboratively. exercise good judgment and creativity. organize work, set priorities, and meet deadlines under pressure. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to connect with diverse students. Proficiency across high school level academic subjects. Reliable transportation and internet access. Must successfully complete all required background checks (TB, State/FBI, and Volunteers in Probation for San Diego County, if applicable). Proactive and goal-oriented attitude. Proficiency in Google Suite. Preferred Qualifications Bilingual in English and Spanish. Two or more years of relevant experience in education, youth development, or a related field. Experience or interest in working with justice-impacted youth. Education, experience, or interest in STEAM fields. Benefits Varies between part time and full time employees.
