Job Summary
The Staff Telecommunications Engineer will assist in various phases of planning, site evaluations, analytical designs, report preparation, and construction documentation as part of a project team. This role will require work on a diverse portfolio of project types and clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Designing various telecommunication project types, including physical pathway infrastructure designs (inside and outside plant), equipment plan layouts, and structured cabling design utilizing client standards or developing new standards as required.
- Assist with project deliverables including cable schedules, bill of materials, specifications, rack/equipment layouts, and associated details.
- Assist with a variety of assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques, including refining rough sketches, sizing various system components, problem analysis, and performing calculations on non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.
- Produce initial designs or sketches and redline/mark-up drawings on ongoing projects.
- Works closely with other disciplines (Architecture, Mechanical, Structural, Civil, Electrical, etc.) to develop coordinated designs for both green-field and brown-field heavy commercial construction projects, including hyperscale data centers, manufacturing facilities, and other large-scale building/campus projects.
- Identify, communicate, and assist in resolving issues on projects as needed.
- Apply design codes and specifications related to design requirements.
- Complete and review design drawings within scope, budget, and schedule. Perform project tasks and assignments within budgeted hours and deadlines.
- Work closely with the project team to ensure deliverables and services are being provided to the client's satisfaction and that projects are following internal QA/QC guidelines.
- Assist in project construction administration, responding to Requests for Interpretation (RFIs), product data submittals, shop drawings, and fiber optic/copper cabling test reviews.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.
- Basic knowledge in telecommunications design, calculations, and systems.
- Basic knowledge in the theory and practices of the engineering discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline.
- Understanding of design software such as Revit and Excel to develop the design deliverables and coordinate with detailers and designers. Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software and programs, including AI tools. Experience in Autodesk Revit is strongly preferred.
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.
- Emphasis on candidates who can think through design, not just execute tasks.
- Strong preference for individuals who understand the broader facility design context.
- Candidates should be capable of working within multidisciplinary teams and contributing to coordinated designs.
Preferred Skills
- Consulting experience preferred.
- Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
- Involvement on campus or in the community is preferred.
- Engineers in Training (EIT) Certification Preferred.
- Experience in Telecommunications or related field.
- Experience with large multidisciplinary projects or construction.
- Proficiency in Bluebeam software for markups and coordination.
- Understanding of design software such as Revit and Excel to develop the design deliverables and coordinate with detailers and designers. Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software and programs, including AI tools. Experience in Autodesk Revit is strongly preferred.

Education Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in electrical, mechanical, or other related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program required.
- Engineers in Training (EIT) Certification Preferred.
- Must have a degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program (internship experience does not count toward required experience).
Required Experience
- Minimum 3 years of utility telecommunications project or related experience required.
Work Environment / Physical Requirements
- Onsite position; no remote/no hybrid.
- Kansas City-based team with periodic travel to project sites.
- May potentially work with federal projects.
- Team: Campus Connectivity Team.
- Scope: Structured cabling and facility telecom infrastructure, with a stronger emphasis on electrical design.
- Project types: Large-scale data center facilities.
- Team size: approximately 20 nationally, with 67 based in Kansas City.
- Primary design tool: Revit (strongly preferred); secondary tools: AutoCAD, Microdesk.
- Design focus includes structured cabling systems and facility infrastructure and layout integration.
- Candidates should understand how building systems and facility structures function together.
- Team leans more toward electrical design than traditional telecom.
- Strong emphasis on structured cabling within facility environments.
