Job description

Assistant Director, Student Counseling Services

Northeastern offers a rewarding working environment for our students and employees. Our faculty and staff are smart, dedicated people who work to create an excellent urban university experience for bright and motivated students.

The Assistant Director (AD) is a key member of the Student Counseling Services (SCS) management team, providing administrative, supervisory, and clinical services to assist in the effective operation of NEIU's Student Counseling Services. The Assistant Director reports to the Director and has leadership responsibilities in the areas of clinical services and training. Specifically, the AD supervises post-doctoral and pre-doctoral trainees, helps design and evaluate clinical services for the center, and directs Student Counseling Services in the absence of the Director. Administrative duties include management of the Counseling Services' training program, using data-informed decision making to inform service needs and outcomes; attention to clinical service demand management; and onboarding new staff and trainees. Clinical duties include the provision of psychological services directly to NEIU students, consultation to faculty and staff, and provision of crisis intervention. Other significant activities involve working with the director and center staff on emerging issues facing the unit.

Job Description

  • Establish, monitor, and evaluate clinical service delivery standards to ensure care reflects evidence-based practice, cultural responsiveness, and contemporary college mental health models.
  • Provide clinical supervision and consultation to licensed and unlicensed counseling staff, trainees, and externs.
  • Monitor and evaluate clinical data to identify service needs, monitor utilization trends, and assess outcomes to ensure effective service provision to NEIU students.
  • Serve as clinical risk management lead, including oversight of crisis response protocols, duty-to-warn procedures, and supporting staff in handling complex high-risk situations.
  • Develop internal professional development, case conferencing, and training to sustain staff clinical excellence and skill growth.
  • Provide primary leadership for the Counseling Services' clinical training program, including serving as a liaison to the area's professional programs; coordinating the selection, supervision, and evaluation of trainees.
  • Provide clinical supervision to postdoctoral fellows and other trainees providing services in Student Counseling Services.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate documentation regarding counseling interventions and supervisory matters.
  • Provide consultation regarding psychological matters to faculty and administration, including on-site attendance for urgent and emergent student situations when needed.
  • Maintain a limited caseload including individual, group, and couples psychological counseling/psychotherapy to NEIU students.
  • Manage the Student Counseling Service in the absence of the Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimal Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology (preferred); MSW or MA in a mental health discipline.
  • A minimum of three years post licensure experience as a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, LCSW, or LCPC in the State of Illinois.
  • Previous experience providing clinical services in a college counseling center environment, preferably at an institution with a significant population of non-traditional commuter students.
  • Previous experience providing clinical services to clients in a diverse, multicultural setting.
  • Previous experience providing clinical supervision to pre-doctoral and post-doctoral psychology trainees.
  • Experience providing campus-based crisis consultation and outreach.

Applications submitted by May 15, 2026, will receive priority review by the search committee.
