Recreation Positions
These classifications have been designated as non-benefited, non-classified, non-merit system, at-will positions.
The City of Mesa is currently recruiting for part-time non-benefitted Recreation Trainees, Recreation Aides, and Recreation Assistants for the summer season as well as year-round opportunities. The summer season positions may work 25 - 38 hours per week between May 2026 through August 2026. Year-round opportunities may work 19 hours per week throughout the year. All applications will be reviewed to determine eligibility for the highest position for which the applicant is qualified.
First review of applications will be Monday, January 19, 2026, and weekly thereafter through August 31, 2026.
Recreation Trainee
A Recreation Trainee performs a variety of routine tasks involving equipment setup, observing, and/or assisting participants in recreation activities, assisting with maintaining order, providing information about building rules and department activities to participants, and maintaining facilities/assisting with custodial activities.

Recreation Aide
As a Recreation Aide, you will set up for program activities and serve as on-site leader, maintain facilities and equipment, observe participants in activities, maintain order, take reservations for facilities, provide information to participants, perform cash handling procedures, maintain records, and maintain facilities for programs.

Recreation Assistant
A Recreation Assistant - Part-Time performs paraprofessional work assisting in organizing and conducting recreation, sports, cultural, and leisure activities. Work may include: assisting with developing, planning, and evaluating activities and events; providing basic skill instruction; providing information and directions to facility and park patrons, performing cash handling procedures, commodities, maintaining records, and directing group activities; and maintaining facilities, equipment, and supplies. Work may include participating in the activities with participants; training staff; assisting with hiring staff; purchasing equipment; and communicating with school officials, partner organizations, staff, park patrons, and family members/caretakers. Work may require use of point-of-sale terminals or cash registers. May supervise and direct the work of Recreation Trainees, Aides, and volunteers. Incumbents in this class may be rotated or transferred to other facilities, parks, and/or assignments based on department or seasonal needs. Work may include setting up tables, chairs, tents, and various equipment; and working evening, weekend, and holiday hours. This class performs related duties as required. Assignments may include the following program areas: Adaptive, Adult Sports, Aquatics, Cashier, Fun'n'Fit, Park Attendant, Recreation Centers, Special Events, Tennis Center, and Youth Sports.
Recreation Assistant ($22.67 Hourly)
Employees work under the general supervision of a Recreation Specialist or other full-time staff member. Employees may work independently once familiar with the routines of the recreation program. Work is subject to regular inspections and review to ensure maintenance of established standards. Because of the variety of duties performed by this classification, employees must be able to work flexible hours and be available for weekend and evening work. This class is FLSA nonexempt (part-time and grant-funded). This class is FLSA exempt-recreational establishment (seasonal).
