Vice President, Development

The Vice President of Development is responsible for leading Morrison Child and Family Services' (Morrison) Development, Marketing, and Communications. This role provides an exciting opportunity to build upon our well-established fundraising efforts as we grow and expand our organization.

The VP works closely with our CEO, our small but mighty development team, including a Development Specialist and a Marketing & Communications Specialist, our Board Members, and our community of supporters to build and strengthen relationships, enhance donor appreciation & engagement efforts, and secure and grow philanthropic support and corporate sponsorships in support of our mission.

This is hands-on fundraising, directly supporting the success of a $40m organization as we drive towards serving 10,000 children and families per year. The VP leads fundraising strategy development, annual planning, and execution through all fundraising channels as well as marketing, communication, and strengthening our brand in Oregon, and nationally as we look to expand our impact. More specifically, the VP serves as Morrison's primary ambassador to the philanthropic community, managing a high-impact donor portfolio, making direct asks, closes gifts, hosting events and building the infrastructure for sustained fundraising success. The VP is also a key public relations contact for the organization and an outwardly visible executive. Essential Job Duties:

  • Responsible for leading and directing all aspects of donor engagement and cultivation, donor relations, donor appreciation & recognition, identification of new donor prospects, and enhancing community awareness of the agency; includes large and boutique events and closing five- and six-figure gifts.
  • Manage the full donor lifecycle, including prospect identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and retention of major donors, Morrison Legacy Society members (planned gifts), foundations, and corporate partners with a focus on long-term relationships and increased philanthropic investment year over year.
  • Grow annual philanthropic revenue from approximately $1M per year toward $2M+ within 3-5 years.
  • Collaborate across departments to identify funding opportunities and translate program outcomes into fundable initiatives, donor stories, and strategic fundraising priorities, and then securing philanthropic grants to support these efforts
  • Equip Board members and brand ambassadors with stories, materials, and collateral to increase philanthropic support through giving, introductions, advocacy, cultivation, and stewardship.
  • Lead and manage CRM best practices, donor data and records, dashboards, and KPI reporting.

Marketing & Communications:

  • Leads and guides marketing and communications efforts designed to build our brand with clients, community, and donors, strengthen fundraising efforts, and support efforts to maximize utilization of key programs and services.
  • Translate Morrison's mission, program needs, and outcomes into a compelling case for support.
  • Align fundraising, marketing, and communications to ensure donor messaging, storytelling, and external positioning are clear and consistent.
  • Oversee donor-facing communications, including newsletters, annual reports, event materials, presentations, press releases, video, and related materials.

Compliance :

  • Demonstrate and promote compliance with Morrison policies, fundraising best practices, HIPAA and client privacy requirements, compliance training standards, and fraud, waste, and abuse prevention practices, including timely reporting of concerns and implementation of corrective actions if ever needed.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to developing a thorough knowledge and application of the Sanctuary model and other organizational policies & practices.
  • Participate in staff development, in-services, and training related to workplace effectiveness; model professional behaviors and implement improvements to business practices with awareness of their impact in a trauma-informed behavioral healthcare organization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities :

Directly supervises employees and carries out supervisory responsibilities following the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training. In addition to educational requirements, this position requires 7+ years of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit fundraising, with demonstrated success in major gifts, donor cultivation, pipeline management, and marketing/communications functions as well as the following:

  • Proven track record of personally securing and closing five- and six-figure gifts, with responsibility for managing a portfolio of high-capacity donors and delivering annual fundraising results.
  • Experience overseeing and integrating donor engagement, marketing, and communications strategies to strengthen brand visibility, donor acquisition, and philanthropic growth.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through metrics-driven, moves management practices, including CRM utilization, pipeline development, and performance tracking.
  • Strong supervisory and team leadership experience, with the ability to build, develop, and scale a high-performing development function.
  • Exceptional organizational and project management skills, with the capacity to manage multiple priorities across fundraising, events, communications, and donor engagement.
  • Experience serving as a trusted external ambassador to donors, foundations, and community partners, with strong relationship-building and representation skills

Certificates, Licenses, and/or Registrations

This position does not require any certificates, licenses, or registrations, but a professional certification (Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) Certification) is preferred.

Travel Requirement

This position requires some travel. Travel will primarily consist of day trips in the Portland/Salem area but may include overnights or longer trips out of the metro area (with minor potential air travel in the future). This position requires personal transportation allowing for travel within Oregon and Washington efficiently. If driving a personal vehicle for work purposes must have and maintain a valid driver's license for state of residency, personal auto liability coverage at the $100,000/$100,000 level, and a driving record permitting coverage under a corporate liability policy.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities :

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate a compelling case for support and engage effectively with donors, boards members, staff and external partners.
  • Deep commitment to Morrison's mission, with integrity, judgment, and professionalism expected of an executive leader.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize, manage multiple initiatives, and operate independently in a fast-paced, goal-oriented environment.
  • Proven ability to build, sustain, and grow authentic relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including major donors, foundations, corporate partners, board members, staff, volunteers, clients, and media.
  • Demonstrated success leading and motivating teams, including setting clear expectations, coaching staff, and holding others accountable in a supportive, performance-driven manner.
  • Collaborative leadership style, with the ability to partner effectively with the CEO, executive leadership, and program leadership to advance organizational priorities.
  • Receptive to feedback with a demonstrated ability to adapt and grow.

Other requirements:

  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be necessary to support fundraising events, donor engagement activities, and organizational priorities.
  • Must be able to pass criminal history background check.
