SUMMARY

Provide quality Healthcare instruction aligned to state and federal requirements associated with Career & Technical Education (CTE) in the Healthcare-related career fields. Possible courses include but are not limited to: Anatomy and Physiology, Emergency Medical Responder, Healthcare Core Curriculum, or Medical Terminology. Implement rigorous inquiry-based learning tasks to engage students in deep content of the healthcare industry. Utilize a variety of assessment strategies - diagnostic, formative and summative, to inform instructional decisions and increase student self-management of learning. Capable of applying the nursing process (assessment, planning, delivery, assurance and evaluation) to coordinated health care for individual students. As needed, assist Special Education teams to provide nursing assessments and recommended educational support services for special needs students enrolled in CTE courses. Recent teaching or professional experience in Healthcare preferred.

Preferred MDE teaching licenses for each program of study:

300300 Medical Careers license to teach in grades 9-12; or the appropriate qualifications for a CTE Tier 1 or 2 license. https://mn.gov/pelsb/

Examples of an appropriate qualification: for a Tier 1 or 2 license include, but are not limited to:

  • A valid License as a Public School Nurse from the Minnesota Department of Education

  • License as a Registered Nurse from the Minnesota Board of Nursing

  • Public Health certification from the Minnesota Board of Nursing

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

  • Paramedic accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Create an educational environment that acknowledges and encourages multiple pathways to post-secondary education including four year degrees, two year degrees from community and technical colleges, industry certifications, apprenticeships and employer-based learning.

  • Support MPS requirements to implement Career & Technical Education programs of study in alignment with Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (Perkins V) state and federal goals and reporting requirements which include:

    • Integration of academics (or liberal arts and sciences) with career and technical education programs.

    • Understand and promote the link between CTE at the secondary and postsecondary levels.

    • Provide students with understanding of all aspects of an industry.

    • Develop, improve or expand the use of technology in CTE.

    • Attend CTE professional development as required to maintain program certification requirements.

    • Actively participate in CTE program evaluations.

    • Initiate, improve, expand and modernize quality CTE programming.

    • Align course curriculum and assessments to Technical Skills Assessments (TSA) approved by Minnesota State and local consortium.

    • Provide activities to prepare special populations for high-skill, high-wage, or high-demand occupations that will lead to a living wage career.

  • Provide context to core academics through integrated, applied and experiential learning (internships, guest speakers, mentoring, job shadowing, worksite tours, field trips, career readiness skills) with a broad exposure to career fields and a balanced high school experience.

  • Have a working knowledge of and implement the Minnesota State Standards and the District Graduation Requirements; knowledge of the subject matter, classroom management techniques, current researched best practices and strategies, as well as students' learning styles and needs, both academic and affective.

  • Teach students the required curricula using strategies that foster thinking, reasoning and problem solving.

  • Collaborate with peers to develop, plan and implement best practices based on the needs/abilities of the students.

  • Assess students' developmental, cognitive and social needs and provide developmentally appropriate instruction to meet those needs.

  • Create lessons and learning environments that are safe, respectful and interesting as well as multicultural/gender and ability fair/developmentally appropriate.

  • Collaborate and communicate regularly with families in making educational decisions and use family and community resources to support learning.

  • Acquire knowledge of the goals of the Minneapolis Public School District Improvement Agenda and site/school goals. Work to support and achieve those goals.

  • Assess own instructional effectiveness through the Professional Development Process (PDP). Participate in ongoing and regular staff, team and individual professional development.

  • Provide care of individual students with special health needs identified by Case Managers. Interpret health findings for educational staff regarding impact of health concerns on learning and accommodations required at school. Interpret to medical providers the school related needs of students.

  • Provide input during health reviews and school nurse health assessments initiated by the student’s high school staff (when necessary).

  • Participate on IEP (Individual Education Plan) team for students with health/sensory/physical concerns or impairments that may interfere with learning including providing special education related services (direct and/or indirect) in the area of health/physical when needed.

  • Support implementation of individual health plans (IHP) and emergency health plans (EHP) for students with handicapping health conditions that require accommodations to attend school.

  • Perform skilled nursing procedures, and delegate nursing care procedures when appropriate (see delegation guidelines) including planning, training, monitoring and supervision of delegation using clear written plans for delegates to follow.

  • Promotes student resiliency and, as needed, address the physical and social/emotional health needs of students and plan interventions.

  • In coordination with the student’s comprehensive high school staff, assist students and families in obtaining health care in the community by referrals to appropriate providers and agencies.

Education and Experience Guidelines

* Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university OR equivalent knowledge gained through related industry experience. Examples of an appropriate industry qualification include, but are not limited to:

  • A valid License as a Public School Nurse from the Minnesota Department of Education

  • License as a Registered Nurse from the Minnesota Board of Nursing

  • Public Health certification from the Minnesota Board of Nursing

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

  • Paramedic accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)

* Prior successful experience student teaching or teaching in an urban, multicultural education setting.

* Demonstrated continued professional development through course work, research, peer collaboration and/or job-embedded staff development.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A valid Minnesota Tier 2, 3 or 4 teaching license in 300300 Medical Careers https://mn.gov/pelsb/; or proof of pending approved licensure; or the appropriate qualifications for a CTE Tier 1 or 2 license identified in the “Preferred MDE teaching licenses” section of this position description.
