  • Salary: The hiring salary for the Maintenance Worker I is $25.68 an hour. The full pay range for the Maintenance Worker I is $25.68 - $29.95 - $34.76. Work performed on 2nd or 3rd shift is eligible for shift differential pay of $2.25 (2nd shift) or $2.50 (3rd shift).

About the Job:

The Facilities Management Department is seeking a dynamic and motivated Maintenance Worker I to join our team. We’re looking for a quick‑thinking, solutions‑driven professional with a strong and versatile background in facilities maintenance. In this role, you’ll be at the heart of maintaining and enhancing our facilities and infrastructure, directly strengthening day‑to‑day airport operations and ensuring everything runs safely, smoothly, and efficiently. Your contributions will make a meaningful impact not only on the SAN traveler experience, but also on the overall reliability and success of airport operations.

What You’ll Do:

  • Maintenance: Performs routine-to-skilled duties with maintenance and repair with construction, concrete, sidewalks, driveways, monuments, curbs, gutters, asphalts, lots, maintenance and repair of physical plant, public works infrastructure, and facilities. Assists craft and trade personnel such as electricians, HVAC technicians, carpenters, painters, plumbers, and maintenance mechanics with welding tasks and metal fabrication.
  • Compliance: Monitors and inspects work performed by others and contractors, ensures compliance with safety standards and regulations, participates in the development and implementation of preventive and predictive maintenance standards and schedules; recommends special work or equipment maintenance. Responds to emergency situations.
  • Equipment and Tools: Operates light and medium-duty motorized maintenance and construction equipment including forklifts, trucks, trailers, aerial lifts and pavement and street sweepers, hand and power tools. Complete physical labor-related tasks and relocates office furniture.
  • Vehicle Operation: Operates and drives Authority vehicles daily to and from work sites, transporting necessary equipment to ensure timely arrival and efficient completion of repairs.
  • Flexibility: The candidate selected for this vacancy may work a non-traditional work schedule which requires night shift and weekend work; including being called back to work during emergency situations.
  • Administrative: Operates computer to create and access records, timecards and work orders, operates vehicles to work sites, attends meetings with departments and performs related duties as assigned.

  1. Project Management: Accurately assesses project scope and timeline by determining required process steps and resources needed to achieve defined outcomes and objectives; monitors and verifies task completion and resolves coordination issues to assure efficient, timely completion.
  2. Relationship & Interpersonal Skills: Cultivates interpersonal rapport and trust, both up and down, by exhibiting consistency and reliability; demonstrated awareness of others’ needs.
  3. Leveraging Technology: Effectively uses and generates information electronically integrates technology solutions and systems.
  4. Critical Thinking: Work independently, critically reviews and translates project requirements, data and information to specify solutions or alternative practice in support of business objectives and strategies.
  5. Communication & Customer Focus: Proficiently exchange information through multiple opportunities including verbal, digital, written, facilitation of work completion and persuasion.
  6. Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain hand and power tools, equipment common to the public works maintenance, building construction and maintenance trades.
  7. Problem-Solving: Analyzes situation or factor, collaboratively generate alternative and practical solutions, readily adapts behavior or new work methods, evolving and unexpected situations. Exercise independent judgment and initiative within established guidelines and without close supervision.

Requirements

The Experience You Need to Have**:

  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D;
  • One year experience in the use of hand, power tools, equipment, and machinery associated with construction, mechanical, electrical, or building trades;
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience.

** Note: The candidate selected for this vacancy may work a non-traditional work schedule which requires night shift and weekend work and must be flexible to work the second or third shift including weekends and holidays.

Licenses, Certificates, and Special Requirements :

  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Authority’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • Successful completion of a fingerprint-based background investigation, training, and testing required for employment and operation of Authority and San Diego County physical security, surveillance, radio and telecommunications equipment.

*Driving is an Essential Function

This role requires regular driving as a critical part of performing work-related duties, specifically involving the operation of Airport Authority vehicles. A valid California driver’s license is required, along with strict adherence to all traffic laws and safety regulations. Applicants must maintain an acceptable driving record to operate Authority vehicles. Compliance with Airport Authority vehicle use policies, including safety protocols and reporting requirements, is mandatory. Applicants must acknowledge that driving Airport Authority vehicles is an essential function of this role.
