The Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering at Yale University is seeking a talented Communications Professional to advance and fully integrate communications across the Center's initiatives and programs, with the goal of increasing visibility and expanding the global impact of green chemistry and green engineering. Working closely with Center leadership and staff, this role will focus on identifying key achievements, opportunities, and areas for growth in support of the Center's mission. The ideal candidate will play an important role in shaping how the Center's work is understood and appreciated by a wide range of audiences from researchers and industry partners to policymakers and the general public. The selected candidate will manage and enhance the Center's websites, social media accounts, and outreach initiatives, driving meaningful engagement with both internal and external stakeholders. Candidates with a passion for sustainability and science, combined with strong communications skills, are encouraged to apply.

The Communications Professional serves as the communications lead for the Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering, functioning as the central point of contact for Center leadership and staff across all communications activities and programs. This role is responsible for developing and executing integrated communication strategies that effectively convey the Center's mission, research, and impact to diverse audiences at the local, national, and global level. The position bridges science and storytelling, ensuring that the Center's work is accurately, compellingly, and consistently represented across all platforms and channels.

A key function of the role will be to work with the Yale School of the Environment's Office of Communications and Yale's Office of Public Affairs and Communications to strategize, develop, and implement communication initiatives that advance the mission of the Center and that align with and advance YSE's and the University's broader communications efforts. In establishing a consistent look and tone for all Center communications, the role will collaborate with YSE's director of design to ensure that all digital and print materials are aligned with School and University branding guidelines.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead regular meetings with Center leadership and staff to identify opportunities for communication items and campaigns
  • Develop streamlined systems and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure timely and consistent delivery of communications and news
  • Engage in clear and accessible science communication efforts tailored to diverse audiences
  • Write press releases and outward-facing articles as needed
  • Work with the YSE Office of Communications, Yale's Office of Public Affairs and Communications, university publications, and other units across campus to develop and publicize stories about the Center's research, programs, and impact
  • Identify and utilize emerging ways of exposure
  • Capture photos and documentation of important and relevant events at Yale and beyond, as assigned
  • Monitor and manage Center websites, ensuring content is accurate, current, and engaging
  • Monitor and manage Center social media accounts, growing reach and fostering community engagement
  • Stay updated on Center publications, summarizing and uploading corresponding announcements to appropriate channels
  • Serve as a key point of contact and management for web development across Center platforms, including stockholm-declaration.org/, chemistryforsustainability.org, globalgreenchem.com, and greenchemistry.yale.edu
  • Continuously optimize the visibility and reach of all Center work across digital and traditional channels utilizing key metrics.

Skills and abilities include:

  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with a developing ability to translate scientific concepts into clear, engaging, and accessible content for diverse audiences from scientific communities to the general public and a willingness to adapt messaging and tone accordingly.
  • Experience with communications strategies across multiple platforms and channels, including social media management, email marketing platforms (e.g. Mailchimp or equivalent), and best practices and analytics.
  • Basic proficiency in website management, content management systems (CMS), foundational web development, and graphic design tools (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent), complemented by an interest in photography and visual storytelling.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, meet deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively with leadership, staff, and external stakeholders, with attention to detail and accuracy throughout.
  • A proactive and positive demeanor, with a strong interest in sustainability, green chemistry, or related scientific fields, and an eagerness to grow within a mission-driven environment, including conference participations upon assignment.

Preferred education and experience include:

  • 34 years of experience in mission-driven organizations and international environments. Demonstrated experience in the development and roll-out of integrated science-related communications strategies in multi-stakeholder environments. Strong record of science communication, storytelling, and community management, rounded by experience in website development and social media.
  • Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g. science communication, graphic and web design, communications, chemistry, chemical engineering or similar). Prior experience in the field of Chemistry or Chemical Engineering; different combinations of work experience and education will be considered.
