The Position

The Recreation and Human Services Department is seeking an enthusiastic, highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills to oversee and coordinate the City's Contract Class Program at the Alexander Hughes Community Center. The Program Specialist provides support to the Program Coordinator of the Recreation Services Division. The Recreation Division oversees the City's contract classes program and rental of public use facilities. The Program Specialist will be directly responsible for supporting instructors, coordinating class offerings, ensuring program compliance, and helping expand recreational opportunities for the community. They will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks, which may include cash and receipt reconciliation, complex customer service requests, developing and implementing office systems, scheduling meetings, preparing routine correspondence and documents, copying, sorting, filing documents, performing data entry, and other related tasks as assigned.

The Program Specialist is part-time and requires approximately 25 hours per week of work. This position is not eligible for benefits. Hours of work are generally Monday-Friday, from 12:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. Work hours may vary with department needs. Some evening, weekend, and holiday hours may be required for special events.

MANDATORY SPECIAL EVENTS

The mandatory special events all staff are required to work include: Village Venture in October; Halloween Spooktacular Saturday before Halloween; Holiday Promenade First Friday in December; Spring Celebration Saturday before Easter; 4th of July Celebration July 4; Monday Night Concert series - Mondays July - August, Movies in the Park series - varying nights in July. In addition, Recreation and Human Services staff may be called upon to work for other special events throughout the year.

Ideal Candidate

Education: Qualified applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have completed 12th grade or equivalent GED.

Experience: Two years of increasingly responsible experience in recreation, social or human services, or a related field.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of, or successful acquisition within six months of employment, a valid CPR and first aid certification, to be maintained throughout employment.
  • A valid California Class C Driver's License and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and through employment is required.

Individuals holding this position are considered mandated reporters under California's Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act ("CANRA"), Penal Code Section 11164-11174.3. As a mandated reporter, these individuals will be required to comply with the agency's Policy on Mandated Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting.
