St. Bernard Catholic School is seeking a faith-filled, knowledgeable, and highly collaborative Middle School English Language Arts Teacher for grades 6–8 for the 2026–2027 school year.

The ideal candidate will possess strong knowledge of middle school English Language Arts curriculum and demonstrate the ability to provide rigorous, standards-based instruction in reading comprehension, literary analysis, writing, grammar, vocabulary, speaking, and critical thinking.

This teacher will help students become confident readers, thoughtful writers, effective communicators, and independent learners who are prepared for the academic expectations of high school. The successful candidate will use differentiated instruction, assessment data, small-group instruction, and targeted interventions to meet the needs of students with varying academic abilities.

The Middle School ELA Teacher will work collaboratively with the middle school faculty, school leadership, and student support personnel to provide a consistent, academically challenging program rooted in the Catholic faith and values.

Primary Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver standards-based English Language Arts instruction for students in grades 6–8.
• Develop students’ reading comprehension, literary analysis, critical-thinking, and evidence-based response skills.
• Teach writing across multiple genres, including: Narrative writing Informative and explanatory writing Argumentative writing Literary analysis Research writing
• Strengthen students’ grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, organization, editing, and revision skills.
• Teach students to cite textual evidence and communicate their ideas clearly in complete, well-developed responses.
• Use novels, informational texts, short stories, poetry, and other appropriate literature to build comprehension and analytical skills.
• Create clear learning objectives, success criteria, and assessments aligned with grade-level standards.
• Apply the Gradual Release of Responsibility model through teacher modeling, guided practice, collaborative learning, and independent application.
• Use differentiated instructional strategies to support diverse learners.
• Provide targeted small-group instruction and intervention for students who need additional support.
• Provide enrichment and academic challenge for students performing above grade level.
• Use formative assessments, classroom data, STAR results, writing samples, and other measures to monitor student progress and adjust instruction.
• Maintain accurate grades, attendance, lesson plans, student records, and parent communication.
• Provide timely and constructive feedback on student assignments and writing.
• Maintain a structured, respectful, academically focused, and faith-filled classroom environment.
• Communicate consistently and professionally with parents and guardians regarding student progress.
• Collaborate with teachers to align expectations, curriculum, assessments, and instructional practices across grade levels.
• Participate fully in faculty meetings, professional development, school events, retreats, liturgies, and other assigned responsibilities.

• Must be a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Roman Catholic Church.
• Demonstrate a strong understanding of Catholic teachings, traditions, and values.
• Model the Catholic faith through personal conduct, professional relationships, prayer, service, and participation in the sacramental life of the Church.
• Create a Christ-centered classroom rooted in dignity, respect, responsibility, compassion, and Gospel values.
• Integrate Catholic identity and appropriate faith-based themes into classroom instruction and student discussions.
• Participate in school Masses, prayer services, retreats, service activities, and faith-formation programs.
• Support the mission of St. Bernard School in forming students spiritually, academically, morally, and socially.

Requirements

• Bachelor/ Master’s Degree in English, Education, Liberal Studies, or a related field required.
• Valid California Teaching Credential preferred.
• Experience teaching English Language Arts at the middle school level preferred.
• Strong knowledge of grades 6–8 English Language Arts standards, curriculum, and instructional practices.
• Strong knowledge of reading comprehension, literary analysis, academic writing, grammar, and vocabulary instruction.
• Demonstrated ability to use differentiated instruction and respond to diverse learning needs.
• Experience using assessment data to guide instruction and provide intervention.
• Strong classroom management, organization, and communication skills.
• Ability to establish high academic expectations while maintaining a supportive and respectful learning environment.
• Ability to collaborate, receive feedback, and contribute positively to a team-based instructional model.
• Commitment to professional growth, continuous improvement, and the mission of Catholic education.
• Ability to use educational technology, digital learning platforms, and student information systems.
• Fingerprinting, background clearance, and Safe Environment training are required through the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
