The Registered Dietitcian/Director of Food Services is responsible for the overall planning, direction, and daily operation of the food and nutrition program at an adult day care center serving older adults and adults with disabilities in Brooklyn, New York. This role ensures the delivery of safe, nutritious, culturally appropriate, and appealing meals and snacks that meet participants’ dietary needs, promote health and well-being, and comply with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations (including New York State Department of Health and NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene standards).
Key Responsibilities
Plan, develop, and oversee menus that meet nutritional guidelines for older adults, accommodate special diets (e.g., diabetic, low-sodium, pureed, allergy-related, cultural/religious preferences), and support participants’ health goals.
Direct all food service operations, including purchasing, receiving, storage, preparation, service, and sanitation.
Supervise, train, schedule, and evaluate kitchen and dining staff; foster a positive, team-oriented work environment.
Ensure strict compliance with food safety, sanitation, and infection-control standards (ServSafe or equivalent); maintain required records and prepare for health department inspections.
Manage the food service budget, control food and labor costs, and implement cost-effective practices without compromising quality or nutrition.
Coordinate with nursing, activities, and social work staff to address individual dietary needs and integrate nutrition education into the day program.
Maintain accurate inventory, vendor relationships, and procurement processes; source high-quality ingredients that reflect the diverse cultural preferences of Brooklyn’s communities.
Develop and update policies and procedures for the food service department; lead continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Ensure a welcoming, dignified dining experience that encourages socialization and participant engagement.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Center Director or Executive Leadership.
Required Qualifications
Associates/Bachelor’s degree in Food Service Management, Nutrition, Dietetics, Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
Minimum of 3–5 years of progressive supervisory or management experience in food service, preferably in healthcare, senior living, adult day care, or similar congregate settings.
Current ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification (or ability to obtain within 30–60 days of hire).
Strong knowledge of nutrition for older adults, therapeutic diets, and New York State / NYC food service and health regulations.
Proven ability to manage budgets, inventory, and staff.
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively with diverse older adult populations and multidisciplinary teams.
Must be able to pass a criminal background check, drug screening, and any required health clearances.
Preferred Qualifications
Registered Dietitian (RD/RDN) credential or Certified Dietary Manager (CDM).
Experience in adult day health care, senior centers, or long-term care settings in New York City.
Bilingual abilities (especially Spanish, Russian, Chinese, or other languages commonly spoken in Brooklyn).
Familiarity with electronic menu management or dietary software systems.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Primarily based in a commercial kitchen and dining area within an adult day care facility.
Ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 25–50 lbs occasionally, and work in a fast-paced environment with temperature variations.
Full-time position; may require early mornings, occasional evenings, or weekends depending on program needs.
