Recreation Activity Center Leader

A current vacancy exists in the Department of Recreation and Parks for a Recreation Activity Center (RAC) Leader. Pay Schedule I, Grade 20, Regular Schedule: 35 hours per week. Employees in this position may be assigned to work nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Definition of Responsibility Supervising, coordinating, organizing, and overseeing various recreational and park programs while ensuring the efficient operation and maintenance of community relations and facilities. Examples of Duties

Job Purpose Under close supervision, leads a wide variety of recreation activities and special events within a recreation activity center.

• Assists in the coordination, planning, promoting, and scheduling of a variety of recreation activities and special events in a heavily programmed recreation activity center.
• Plans and leads a diversified program of indoor and outdoor activities in the following categories: cultural arts, fitness, hobbies, performing arts, sports, and socialization.
• Meets with participants of recreation activity center programs to determine leisure activity needs.
• Participates in recreation activity center activities.
• Chaperones field trips taken by recreation activity center participants.
• Interacts with recreation activity center program participants.
• Assists children in completing homework.
• Inspects facilities to make certain that structures, areas, and equipment are safe, adequate, and functioning properly.
• Recruits, trains and coordinates the work of occasional staff, recruits, trains and coordinates the work of volunteers.

Qualifications

Completion of at least 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university

Possession of valid CPR and first aid certifications

Possession of a valid ServSafe Food Handler certification

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Entry Level)

• Knowledge of the needs, capabilities, and interests of diverse youth groups and individuals.
• Basic knowledge of the organization of clubs, entertainment, leagues, and tournaments.
• Knowledge of CPR and first aid.
• Skill in completing forms and reports.
• Good interpersonal skills.
• Skill in developing recreation activities.
• Ability to organize and schedule a variety of recreation programs directed towards at-risk youth.
• Ability to implement activities conducted at a recreation activity center.

• Knowledge of County and departmental policies, procedures, regulations, and rules.
• Knowledge of departmental recreation and parks programs, services, and operations.
• Knowledge of the objectives and theory of neighborhood recreation programs.
• Basic knowledge of community, human, and social services assistance programs.
• Knowledge of CPR and first aid.
• Skill in conducting recreation and education activities.
• Skill in handling hostile individuals and individuals experiencing a crisis.
• Skill in administering CPR and first aid.
• Ability to handle hostile individuals and crises.
• Ability to lead and supervise volunteers.
• Ability to administer CPR and first aid.

Licenses and Certificates

Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a Non-Commercial, Class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment.

Must earn and maintain valid CPR and first aid certifications within 10 months of appointment.

Must earn and maintain a valid ServSafe Food Handler certification within 10 months of appointment.

Conditions of Employment

Employees in this classification may be assigned to work evenings, holidays, nights, and weekends as needed.

Employees in this classification must maintain valid CPR and first aid certifications throughout employment.

Employees in this classification who do not maintain valid CPR and first aid certifications are subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

Employees in this classification must obtain and maintain a valid ServSafe Food Handler certification within 10 months of appointment.

Employees in this classification who do not obtain a valid ServSafe Food Handler certification within 10 months of appointment are subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination. The work of this classification entails walking over rough and uneven surfaces in the inspection of facilities and grounds, and infrequent exposure to adverse weather while conducting outdoor public programs and events.

Some lifting and carrying are required in preparing for programs and events.

Administering CPR and first aid, handling and serving food to participants of recreation activity center programs.
