Role Overview

The Associate Director of Teacher Residency owns the implementation and continuous improvement of KIPP NorCal's teacher residency program, ensuring residents and mentor teachers receive the coaching, development, and support needed to grow into highly effective educators. This role serves as the primary instructional lead for the residency experience, partnering with school leaders, mentors, and Alder Graduate School of Education to develop a strong and diverse teacher pipeline for KIPP NorCal schools.

In this role, you own a defined set of department Key Results and decide how to achieve them. You escalate trade-offs that require your Director's authority.

Core Responsibilities

  • Residency Instruction, Coaching, and Development
    • Owns the instructional experience for teacher residents by teaching weekly seminars, which include designing and facilitating professional learning that develops strong instructional practice and accelerates readiness for lead teaching roles.
    • Coaches residents and mentor teachers through observation, feedback, modeling, and individualized development planning to improve instructional effectiveness and student outcomes.
    • Uses observation, performance, and program data to identify development needs and adjust coaching and learning experiences to maximize participant growth.
    • Aligns support for Resident-Mentor pairs by partnering with school leaders, assistant principals, and instructional coaches to create coherent development experiences across schools.
  • Mentor Development and Partnership
    • Designs and facilitates mentor teacher learning experiences that strengthen coaching capacity, improve resident support, and increase program quality across the network.
    • Oversees ongoing support structures for mentor teachers, ensuring consistent implementation of residency expectations and instructional best practices.
    • Aligns stakeholder expectations across schools and program partners to create a high-quality and equitable residency experience.
  • Resident Recruitment and Pipeline Development
    • Drives recruitment efforts that build and sustain a diverse, high-quality resident pipeline aligned to KIPP NorCal staffing needs and teacher pathway goals.
    • Oversees candidate screening and selection processes to ensure residents demonstrate the potential to become highly effective educators.
    • Partners with school teams to promote the residency program and increase awareness of teacher pathway opportunities across the organization.
    • Monitors recruitment, placement, retention, and completion data to strengthen resident outcomes and improve long-term teacher retention.
  • Program Design and Graduate Coursework
    • Internalizes, adapts, and teaches graduate-level coursework that aligns academic learning with residency experiences, KIPP NorCal instructional priorities, and Alder Graduate School of Ed.
    • Evaluates resident performance through coursework, assessments, and coaching evidence to ensure participants meet program expectations and credentialing requirements.
    • Drives continuous improvement efforts by gathering participant feedback, analyzing outcomes, and recommending enhancements to curriculum and program design.
  • Program Operations and External Partnerships
    • Oversees residency program operations, including event coordination, stakeholder communications, and program logistics that support a seamless participant experience.
    • Manages the relationship with Alder Graduate School of Education through ongoing collaboration, participation in partnership meetings, and alignment of program goals. This includes, but is not limited to, participating collaboratively in weekly Residency team meetings, Leadership Retreats, and other events as part of the Clinical Faculty Team (e.g., weekly clinical faculty meetings).
    • Coordinates program milestones, reporting requirements, and annual planning processes to ensure strong execution and compliance.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills

Required Qualifications

Experience - 46 years of professional experience in K12 education, including at least three years of classroom teaching experience. At least two years of experience coaching teachers, developing educators, or leading adult learning initiatives. Demonstrated success managing projects involving multiple stakeholders and competing priorities. Familiarity with California teacher credentialing requirements and educator preparation pathways.

Education - Master's degree required. Ability to serve as an instructor for graduate-level coursework through Alder Graduate School of Education.

Knowledge/skils

  • Strong expertise in instructional coaching, adult learning theory, teacher development, and observation and feedback practices.
  • Ability to analyze qualitative and quantitative data to identify trends and drive program improvements.
  • Excellent facilitation and presentation skills for both small-group coaching and large-group professional development.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to influence and collaborate across schools, departments, and external partners.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and educational opportunity for historically underserved students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • School leadership, assistant principal, instructional coach, or administrative experience.
  • Experience working within a teacher residency, educator preparation, or credentialing program.
  • Experience partnering with higher education institutions or educator preparation organizations.

Work Setting - School-facing

Travel Expectation - Frequent school travel to Stockton, San Jose, Peninsula, San Francisco, and the East Bay

Driver's License - Must have a valid CA driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle for work-related travel

Physical Demands - Ability to navigate office and school campuses, use technology, and occasionally lift or carry materials [up to 20 lbs].

Mental Demands - Ability to manage competing priorities, concentrate for sustained periods, analyze complex information, and make decisions under normal work pressures.

Environmental Demands - Primarily school-based environment, with regular travel between school sites

KIPP Northern California is dedicated to you and your family's well-being! We offer a competitive salary as well as a comprehensive benefits package. Benefits include medical, dental, vision coverage, paid time off, retirement plan with employer contribution and commuter benefits.

We benchmark annually against comparably-sized non-profit organizations in the regions where we operate, to offer competitive salaries. The salary range for this position is between $104,000 and 127,000.
