Job description

Project Manager, Battery & Avionics

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.

We are pioneering the next generation of aerospace technology, developing innovative solutions that combine advanced energy storage systems with sophisticated avionics to power the future of flight. Our integrated approach to battery and avionics systems enables unprecedented capabilities in our aerospace platforms, supporting our mission to revolutionize how vehicles operate in air and space. We foster a dynamic environment where technical excellence and project execution drive our success.

As a Project Manager, Battery & Avionics, you will lead multidisciplinary teams in the development, integration, and qualification of integrated power and avionics systems for our aerospace platforms. This unique role bridges the gap between energy storage technologies and flight-critical avionics, requiring expertise in both domains. You will oversee projects from concept through delivery, ensuring that battery systems and avionics components work seamlessly together while meeting stringent performance, safety, and reliability requirements.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lead complex projects integrating battery systems and avionics technologies, managing scope, schedule, budget, and technical performance
  • Develop comprehensive project plans that address the interdependencies between power systems and avionics components
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams including electrical, mechanical, software engineers, and test personnel
  • Manage technical interfaces between battery systems, power distribution, and avionics subsystems
  • Oversee design, development, and qualification testing of integrated battery and avionics solutions
  • Lead technical risk assessment and mitigation strategies focused on battery safety, performance, and avionics reliability
  • Facilitate design reviews, technical interchange meetings, and status updates with stakeholders
  • Collaborate with regulatory compliance teams to ensure battery systems and avionics meet applicable standards (DO-160, DO-178, DO-254, UN 38.3, etc.)
  • Manage supplier relationships for battery cells, battery management systems, and avionics components
  • Track project metrics and key performance indicators, implementing corrective actions as needed
  • Balance competing priorities between power system requirements and avionics functionality
  • Generate regular status reports and communicate project health to leadership
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives across battery operations and avionics development

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field
  • 5+ years of experience in project management for technical products
  • Demonstrated knowledge of battery technologies and energy storage systems
  • Experience with avionics systems, including flight computers, sensors, or communications equipment
  • Understanding of battery management systems (BMS) and their integration with vehicle systems
  • Familiarity with aerospace or automotive development lifecycles and qualification processes
  • Proficiency with project management methodologies and tools (e.g., MS Project, Jira, Agile/Scrum)
  • Strong leadership skills with ability to manage cross-functional technical teams
  • Excellent communication and presentation abilities
  • Proven problem-solving skills in complex technical environments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering, or MBA
  • PMP certification or equivalent project management credential
  • Experience with lithium-ion battery technology, thermal management, and battery safety
  • Knowledge of power electronics and power distribution systems
  • Experience with DO-178, DO-254, and other avionics certification standards
  • Background in flight test operations or hardware-in-the-loop testing
  • Familiarity with battery testing protocols and safety standards (UN 38.3, IEC 62133, UL 1642)
  • Experience with systems engineering concepts and requirements management
  • Knowledge of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) practices
  • Experience managing projects with significant technical risk or regulatory constraints
  • Background in aerospace, defense, or electric vehicle industries
