Job description

Manager, Martin Clinic

The Manager, Martin Clinic is responsible for the daily operations of the assigned Myron K. Martin Wellness Clinic. This role ensures the highest level of customer service and quality of care for all clients and patients while upholding standards of care and ensuring uniformity of clinic medical policies and procedures. The Manager, Martin Clinic mentors and trains staff to operate at peak performance, nurtures a positive and collaborative work culture, and partners with leadership to guide clinic operations strategically and efficiently maximizing the clinic's availability to provide the community with access to veterinary care.

Summary of Essential Responsibilities:

  • Uphold and enforce shelter medical policies and procedures across all sites to ensure consistent standards of care.
  • Mentor, train, and develop staff to achieve peak performance, efficiency, and professional growth.
  • Nurture and maintain a positive, collaborative, and solutions-focused workplace culture.
  • Regularly assess services provided to ensure practices are in place to provide a high level of service to the community.
  • Work with senior leadership to proactively identify challenges, implement solutions, and engage in strategic planning.
  • Draft and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for technical tasks; collaborate with the Chief Veterinarian on medical protocols.
  • Contribute to budget planning, management, and variance reporting.
  • Actively engage volunteers to improve integration, support, and recognition within clinic operations.
  • Serve as an ambassador for the SPCA of Texas by sharing its mission and promoting opportunities for community support.

Summary of Essential Job Tasks:

  • Plan and implement clinic programs.
  • Oversee clinic schedules, payroll, and timecards for staff across sites.
  • Maintain open communication with Clinic Veterinarians regarding technician performance and workflows.
  • Ensure a safe, clean, and healthy environment for animals, staff, volunteers, and clients.
  • Supervise clinic staff, including hiring, evaluation, mentoring, and disciplinary actions.
  • Set clear performance expectations and maintain accountability for all clinic staff.
  • Provide training for technical staff in anesthesia, monitoring equipment, x-ray, blood/chemistry analyzers, and other tools; troubleshoot and problem-solving as needed.
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients, rescue partners, volunteers, and vendors.
  • Maintain databases and generate daily, weekly, and monthly reports in compliance with SPCA of Texas protocols.
  • Assist with clinic operations as needed, including check-in/out, client communications, and follow-up calls.
  • Coordinate medical inventory and supplies, ensuring cost-effective purchasing and accurate record-keeping.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including controlled substance management.
  • Liaise with vendors to negotiate pricing and evaluate new products or promotions.
  • Support interdepartmental collaboration to improve efficiency, resource sharing, and staff development.
  • Perform Veterinary Technician duties when necessary.

Abilities Required:

  • Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Strong judgment and decision-making skills, weighing animal welfare, staff needs, and organizational priorities.
  • Clear oral and written communication skills to ensure understanding across diverse teams.
  • Ability to monitor performance and implement corrective action.
  • Capacity to remain effective under stressful conditions and process information quickly and accurately.
  • Static Strength: the ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 40 pounds.
  • Judgment and Decision Making: the ability to consider the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
  • Oral and Written Expression: the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
  • Monitoring: the ability to monitor and assess performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.
  • Emotional and Mental Requirements: the ability to work effectively under stressful conditions. Ability to rapidly and accurately process information.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years supervisory experience in the animal field.
  • Bachelor's degree in business management or related field preferred.
  • Fear Free Certification required within 30 days of hire.
  • Bilingual in Spanish a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to build cohesive, high-performing teams.
  • Positive, solution-oriented leadership with strong mentoring and motivational skills.
  • Experience in budget oversight, vendor management, and cross-departmental collaboration.

Applicant Information:

  • Position may require more than 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week, including weekends.
  • Must demonstrate initiative, professionalism, and a strong commitment to the mission of the SPCA of Texas.
  • Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm
