Senior Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations

Administrator Level (for MPP positions only)

This position is an Administrator II in the California State University Management Personnel Plan (MPP), reporting to the Associate Vice President of Development.

Salary is commensurate with experience.

The Senior Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) will build on the University-wide program to steward and grow corporate and foundation support. The University has a robust CFR fundraising presence, and the Senior Director will work to proactively expand and leverage relationships to identify and increase new funding opportunities. The Senior Director is a key member of the centralized development team and will manage the planning, organizing, and implementing of the corporate and foundation fundraising program with the goal of increasing support focused on the University's strategic and campaign priorities. The incumbent works with senior leadership and faculty to develop and implement strategies and relationships that increase opportunities for corporate and foundation philanthropy, sponsorships, collaborative research, professional and executive training, student internships and recruitment, and continuing education. The Senior Director will have a deep understanding of both the nuances of effective foundation grant seeking and of the business and marketing needs of corporations and the ability to develop complex relationships and strategies to address them. The senior director will implement and manage corporate and foundation relationships to facilitate communication between campus stakeholders and empower units to build deeper and broader relations with funders. The Senior Director is a self-motivated individual with proven networking and leadership skills. The Senior Director will manage the Corporate and Foundation Relations program to ensure that the mission and goals of the campus are achieved with respect to corporate and foundation support for philanthropy. The Senior Director will partner with the various colleges and major fundraising units, and their assigned development officers to provide critical resources and personnel to proactively identify funding opportunities and make fruitful matches with corporate and foundation funding sources. The Senior Director will be supported by and will manage the director of CFR in this work. This position reports to the Associate Vice President of Development.

Structuring Work

  • Develop and execute high-level comprehensive fundraising strategies for corporations and foundations with major revenue potential in support of university and campaign priorities.
  • Develops an annual business plan based on development office and priorities in coordination with the AVP of Development.
  • Effectively manage follow-up and reporting requirements in an appropriate manner while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Discover and qualify new prospects, especially in the Corporate space.
  • Plans development-oriented campus visits for current and potential partners.

Inspiring Performance

  • Lead the Corporate and Foundation Relations Office and develop strategies and plans to secure private support from corporate and foundation partners, establish goals and objectives, and measure progress against those goals/objectives.
  • Serve as a resourceful and effective fundraising leader. Provide insight and advice to internal and external stakeholders on the opportunities of existing and potential partnership opportunities. Explore the university for corporate and foundation funding opportunities, including initiating and managing a circuit of regular presentations about CFR services to colleges, departments, and major units.
  • Identify and promote potential sponsorship and naming opportunities throughout the campus, in close coordination with university leadership. Provide staff support to university, college and departmental leaders to help develop worthwhile funding opportunities, identify potential funders and proposals for priority programs.

Building Teams

  • Identify, develop, and manage relationships between C-level executives, board members and other corporate and foundation leaders with the University President and other senior administrators and faculty, bringing together stakeholders and establishing networks to nurture productive relationships. Arrange, manage, and prepare detailed briefs for visits and campus tours with high-level corporate and foundation leaders and the President, university leadership, and faculty.
  • Partner with the donor relations and university communications teams to ensure the proper stewardship and acknowledgement of corporate and foundation support.

Using and Sharing Information

  • Build and manage a portfolio of active and potential corporate and foundation prospects and funders. Personally visit regularly with key corporate prospects and foundation program officers.
  • Prepare and present written proposals for corporate and foundation funding that attract both new and current investors.

Managing Talents

  • Initiate potential funding opportunities in close coordination with deans and faculty leaders.
  • The Senior Director manages the Director of Foundation Relations and other staff as assigned.

Facilitating Change

  • Regularly review "lapsed" corporate and foundation donors to ensure that new funding opportunities are presented to renew and/or deepen support.

Other Duties as Assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Seven or more years of successful corporate and foundation fundraising experience.

A bachelor's degree is required; master's degree is preferred.

Working knowledge of corporate business and foundation development settings; experience in higher ed CFR is preferred.

Proven track record of CFR solicitations and grant success.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, and experience at making presentations. Ability to synthesize information and compose thorough, clear, and effective proposals and documents.

Excellent analytical project management skills, ability to understand complex strategies, and ability to multi-task and meet competing deadlines.

Demonstrated "cold calling" experience and ability to create and sustain new relationships.

Ability to work in a diverse environment and with a diverse set of internal and external constituents.

Preferred Qualifications

Understanding of the dynamics of corporate and foundation partnerships and giving, business trends, and other related business conditions that may impact corporate investments and foundation grant making.

Adaptability and sensitivity to corporate and foundation and academic objectives. Demonstrated ability to work with faculty and administrators from a variety of disciplines, and to contribute and function within a complex university setting.

Working knowledge of the Bay Area and ability to engage with the local business community.

Environmental/Physical/Special

Flexibility to work on weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Automobile travel is required for visits to donors, training, and alumni events. Must possess a valid driver's license and comply with Defensive Driver's Training Program requirements if a vehicle is used to travel on official business.

Periodic air travel required
