Job description

Superintendent, Automation, Electrical & Measurement

The Superintendent, Automation, Electrical & Measurement (AEM) is responsible for leading the safe, reliable, and cost-effective execution of automation, electrical, instrumentation, SCADA, communications, and measurement activities across Crescent Energy's Permian Basin region. This position provides leadership for field Automation, Electrical, and Measurement personnel while ensuring production facilities, well sites, saltwater disposal systems, water infrastructure, compressor stations, and associated equipment operate safely and reliably.

The Superintendent partners closely with Production Operations, Facilities Engineering, Drilling, Completions, Production Engineering, IT/OT, Production Accounting, HSE, Supply Chain, and Regulatory teams to maximize production uptime, improve equipment reliability, and support Crescent Energy's operational growth throughout the Permian Basin.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, direction, coaching, and development to AEM foremen, technicians, and other assigned personnel across the Permian Basin.
  • Establish regional priorities and allocate company and contractor resources to meet production, reliability, project, and emergency-response needs.
  • Set clear performance expectations; manage employee performance, competency development, training, succession planning, and career progression.
  • Build a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, ethical conduct, and continuous improvement while promoting effective communication across field teams.
  • Participate in workforce planning, recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, organizational design, and after-hours coverage planning.
  • Select, direct, and evaluate contractors based on safety, technical quality, cost, schedule, reliability, and adherence to Crescent standards.
  • Oversee the design, programming, installation, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of PLCs, RTUs, HMIs, SCADA systems, telemetry, control logic, and associated instrumentation.
  • Ensure automation systems provide reliable monitoring, alarm management, remote control, data capture, and operational safeguards for wells, facilities, compression, water systems, and disposal assets.
  • Lead automation upgrades and evaluate technology that can safely reduce downtime, eliminate repetitive work, improve surveillance, and increase production efficiency.
  • Oversee field communications infrastructure, including licensed and unlicensed radio, microwave, wireless networks, backhaul, routing and switching, towers, antennas, and supporting power systems.
  • Coordinate with IT/OT and cybersecurity teams to maintain secure, supportable industrial networks, controlled access, backups, configuration standards, and recovery capability.
  • Ensure critical communications and SCADA outages are promptly diagnosed, escalated, communicated, and resolved; maintain practical response and contingency plans.
  • Maintain accurate network, configuration, asset, inventory, licensing, and as-built documentation and ensure applicable FCC, FAA, and tower-safety requirements are met.
  • Ensure the safe and reliable operation of medium- and low-voltage power distribution systems supporting Permian Basin production assets.
  • Oversee installation, maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting of transformers, switchgear, motor control centers, variable frequency drives, motors, generators, protective devices, backup power, and solar-powered systems.
  • Provide technical oversight for load studies, utility load sheets, service installations, protective-device selection and coordination, arc-flash requirements, and applicable electrical codes.
  • Coordinate planned electrical outages, commissioning, startup support, storm recovery, and unplanned outage restoration with Operations, Engineering, utilities, and contractors.
  • Support power-cost and electrical-billing reviews, allocation accuracy, demand management, and projects that improve power reliability or reduce operating cost.
  • Conduct field and system audits to verify equipment integrity, technician competency, documentation quality, and compliance with Crescent electrical standards and safe work practices.
  • Ensure accurate, ethical, and auditable oil, gas, and water measurement for custody transfer, allocation, operational accounting, and regulatory reporting.
  • Oversee installation, configuration, maintenance, calibration, proving, witnessing, and troubleshooting of flow computers, electronic flow measurement equipment, meters, LACT units, tank-level systems, analyzers, pressure and temperature devices, control valves, and related instrumentation.
  • Develop and enforce regional measurement practices, calibration schedules, meter records, configuration controls, data archiving, discrepancy-resolution methods, and audit trails consistent with applicable API, AGA, contractual, and regulatory requirements.
  • Establish checks and balances to identify volume, quality, and energy-content discrepancies; ensure material exceptions are investigated, documented, corrected, and communicated promptly.
  • Partner with Production Accounting, Commercial, Engineering, Operations, and purchasers to protect data integrity, resolve disputes, support audits, and confirm measurement requirements are incorporated into contracts and new projects.
  • Promote safe measurement work around pressure, stored energy, hydrocarbons, H2S, traffic, and other field hazards.
  • Provide AEM support for well sites, central production facilities, compressor stations, gathering systems, LACT facilities, saltwater disposal facilities, produced-water gathering, water transfer, and gas-lift infrastructure.
  • Coordinate AEM resources for new well turn-in-lines, facility expansions, infrastructure projects, commissioning, startup, turnover, and post-startup stabilization.
  • Develop preventive and predictive maintenance strategies and use the company's work-management system to plan, prioritize, schedule, document, and monitor work.
  • Lead or support troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions for significant AEM failures, recurring outages, measurement discrepancies, and production losses.
  • Ensure Management of Change requirements, control narratives, cause-and-effect documentation, alarm rationalization, drawings, settings, configurations, and turnover records are complete and current.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with field Operations and provide practical technical options that balance safety, production impact, reliability, cost, and schedule.
  • Champion Crescent Energy's commitment to safe operations through visible field leadership, pre-job planning, stop-work responsibility, and consistent reinforcement of Life-Saving Rules and company expectations.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and applicable OSHA, NEC, API, environmental, state, federal, contractual, and industry requirements.
  • Maintain effective programs and field execution for Lockout/Tagout, electrical safe work, arc-flash protection, energized work, confined space, line locating, working at heights, and other discipline-specific hazards.
  • Conduct field safety observations, audits, risk assessments, and competency reviews; address deficiencies and verify corrective actions are completed.
  • Participate in incident investigations and learning reviews and ensure lessons learned are translated into standards, training, equipment, or work-process improvements.
  • Provide leadership during storms, power disruptions, communications failures, measurement events, and other operational emergencies, including after-hours response when required.

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, or a related field; equivalent relevant industry experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 10 years of oil and gas operations experience, including at least five years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of production automation, electrical power distribution, instrumentation, measurement systems, SCADA systems, and PLC programming fundamentals.
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and coordinate work across multiple operating areas.
  • Experience managing contractors, budgets, and capital projects.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands and respond effectively to operational emergencies.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Working Conditions

  • Regular travel to field locations throughout the Permian Basin is required.
  • Work includes office and field environments, exposure to weather and industrial operating conditions, and the required use of personal protective equipment.
  • Must be able to access operating locations and equipment, including walking on uneven terrain and using stairs or ladders, consistent with job requirements and applicable accommodations.
  • Availability for occasional nights, weekends, and after-hours emergency response is required.
  • Other duties may be assigned based on business and operational needs.
