Property Large Loss Adjuster

Mercury Insurance's Property Large Loss Adjusters are trusted experts who show up for policyholders during some of the most challenging moments of their lives bringing deep expertise, empathy, and decisive action to complex property claims. In this senior-level remote and field-based role you will operate with a high degree of independence to investigate, evaluate, and resolve sophisticated homeowner and potentially commercial property claims, making a meaningful impact on both the customer experience and the integrity of Mercury's claims operation. As a Property Large Loss Adjuster, typical losses are in excess of $250,000, and you will travel to our customer's homes or commercial properties to conduct onsite inspections. This role requires advanced property claims coverage knowledge, claims investigations, scope and estimate development, vendor coordination, reserve management, and negotiation skills to settle claims promptly and efficiently to ensure our customers receive the highest level of support and resolution.

Our Property Large Loss Adjusters also uses virtual inspection and collaboration technology and software such as Xactimate, ClaimX Video collaboration and other tools when appropriate. Our large loss property adjuster may also provide technical guidance, file direction, or support to less experienced team members.

Responsibilities

Customer Service and Collaboration

  • Deliver clear, empathetic, timely, professional service and communications with customers, vendors and all parties involved during complex and often stressful loss situations.
  • Communicate clearly and proactively regarding coverage, claim status, next steps, required documentation, and settlement decisions.
  • Partner effectively with internal stakeholders such as leadership, SIU, subrogation, legal, vendors, and catastrophe or shared services partners as needed to resolve complex files.
  • Comfort with in person, video, phone, chat, email, etc. that match customer communication preferences.
  • Support knowledge sharing, mentorship, and technical development of less experienced property claims team members as requested.

Claim Investigation and Coverage Analysis

  • Investigate high-severity and high-complexity property claims to confirm facts, origin and cause of loss, damages, and all applicable exposures.
  • Evaluate and address all relevant claim components, which may include Dwelling, Other Structures, Contents, Loss of Use, and, when assigned, additional property-related exposures.
  • Compare investigative findings against policy language, endorsements, exclusions, conditions, and applicable legal or regulatory requirements to determine coverage.
  • Identify, evaluate, and appropriately escalate issues involving representation, litigation, appraisal, fraud indicators, subrogation potential, code upgrade, and other complex claim considerations.

Field Inspection, Estimating, and File Management

  • Conduct on-site inspections of damaged properties, which may include roofs, attics, crawl spaces, and other loss locations, to assess scope, severity, and repair considerations.
  • Document losses thoroughly through photographs, measurements, diagrams, detailed estimates, file notes, and supporting claim documentation.
  • Prepare, review, and revise repair estimates using Xactimate and other applicable estimating or claim tools.
  • Use virtual inspection and video collaboration technology, when appropriate, to evaluate damage, support claim progression, and coordinate with customers, contractors, experts, and vendors.
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and complete claim file documentation throughout the life of the claim.
  • Manage claim diaries, monitor open issues and exposures, and take prompt action to move files toward fair and timely resolution.

Negotiation, Settlement, and Financial Stewardship

  • Establish, document, and adjust reserves within assigned authority and recommend changes requiring higher approval.
  • Negotiate scope, pricing, and settlement of claims with policyholders, contractors, public adjusters, attorneys, experts, and other involved parties, consistent with company standards and applicable regulations.
  • Make sound claim decisions that balance customer experience, policy obligations, regulatory compliance, and loss cost management.
  • Monitor claim expense, repair progression, and vendor activity to support quality outcomes and avoid unnecessary cost.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education and relevant related experience.

Experience

Minimum:

  • 7 or more years of successful property claims handling experience investigating, estimating, negotiating, and resolving high-severity property claims.
  • Prior field adjusting experience involving on-site inspections and detailed estimate writing.
  • Experience handling losses involving multiple trades, substantial structural damage, ALE, contents, represented files, appraisal, litigation, subrogation or salvage considerations.
  • Experience coordinating and interpreting expert reports, including structural engineering plans, architectural drawings, and other technical claim documentation.
  • Experience working directly for an insurance carrier, independent adjusting firm, or similar property claims organization in a large-loss capacity.
  • Prior commercial claims handling preferred but not required.

Licensing and Certifications

Minimum:

  • As a condition of employment hold and maintain required state adjuster licensing as applicable.
  • Hold and maintain all required continuing education and adjuster licensing compliance.
  • Hold and maintain a valid driver's license and driving record that meets Company standards.

Preferred:

  • Industry designations or certifications such as AIC, CPCU, SCLA, IICRC, or similar credentials relevant to property claims, estimating, or restoration.
  • Level 2 or Above Xactimate Certification

Skills and Abilities

Minimum:

  • Advanced knowledge of property claim investigation, coverage analysis, estimating, negotiation, and settlement practices.
  • Strong working knowledge of residential construction methods, repair sequencing, building materials, and applicable estimating standards.
  • Strong technical proficiency with Xactimate and related claims or estimating systems.
  • Ability to independently evaluate high-value, high-exposure claims and make sound decisions within authority.
  • Strong written, verbal, negotiation, and interpersonal communication skills to provide exceptional customer service.
  • Experience in identifying and referring potentially fraudulent claims to SIU for further investigation
  • Strong analytical ability, sound judgment, attention to detail, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to travel regularly for field inspections and claim-related meetings.
  • Ability to use video, mobile, and other digital tools to support virtual claim handling and collaboration.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy, responsiveness, and professionalism.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor others, provide technical guidance, and contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Experience coordinating with experts, engineers, contractors, public adjusters, attorneys, and independent adjusters on complex claims.
  • Experience handling Catastrophe related property losses or surge volumes.
