Job description

High School Dean Of Students

Lead or coordinate various high school programs that promote safety, student achievement, and school improvement.

Performance responsibilities and essential functions include:

  • Partner with the implementation of the school-wide discipline program for the purpose of promoting effective student behavior and success, with primary responsibility for 9th grade discipline, and leadership of the Freshman Success Team.
  • Lead the oversight of the student attendance program including using a variety of interventions for the purpose of promoting excellent student attendance.
  • Provide assistance with and/or facilitate building specific committees for the purpose of promoting school safety, student achievement, and/or school improvement.
  • Coordinate or lead various district and school programs for the purpose of enhancing communication, involvement and student success.
  • Communicate and collaborate with parents and school community for the purpose of fostering student success and achievement.
  • Foster and manage a safe, positive learning environment for the purpose of promoting effective student behavior and success.
  • Support coordination of building, district and state testing.
  • Maintain detailed records as well as prepare and disseminate reports.
  • Participate in various meetings for the purpose of implementing school initiatives and addressing student needs.
  • Implement and comply with District policies and the Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Maintain consistent attendance and conform to regular work hours specified under contract.
  • Create a school culture that promotes the ongoing improvement of teaching and learning for students and staff.
  • Manage school climate and facilities to promote student, staff, and school safety.
  • Partner with the school community to promote student learning.
  • Interact professionally with students, staff and community.
  • Perform other related job duties as assigned by supervisor(s).

Skills, knowledge and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:

  • Knowledge of and ability to use a variety of instructional and student management strategies.
  • Knowledge of high school curriculum (9-12).
  • Ability to collect and analyze data using various technology tools and programs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of comprehensive high school philosophy.
  • Ability to effectively meet developmental needs of high school students.
  • Skill, ability and passion for working with at-risk adolescents.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations governing schools.
  • Skills in managing and promoting positive student behavior.
  • Understanding and use of restorative justice practices.
  • Knowledge or and ability to use data-driven best practices.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with others.
  • Skills in and ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Skills and abilities in organization, time management, and record keeping.
  • Ability to interact positively and effectively with parents, students, staff, and administrators.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to strengthen job-related competencies.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret rules and regulations governing the operation of a school.
  • Skills in effective decision making, problem solving and group facilitation.
  • Skills in resolving conflict, addressing issues, and grievances.
  • Skills in interpersonal relations and collaboration.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people under a variety of circumstances.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work priorities.
  • Ability to utilize district and community resources to meet student and program needs.

Education:

  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate; possess endorsement(s) appropriate for high school (grades 9-12) students.

Experience:

  • High school teaching and leadership experience.
  • Experience leading school-wide student behavior supports and interventions.
  • Proficiency using technology tools and programs to collect and analyze student behavior and achievement data.
  • Communicating with and presenting to a wide variety of school stakeholders.
  • Experience/exposure working with students in poverty.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Possess or be working toward administrative credential, preferred.
