Director, Disability Justice Initiative

American Progress is seeking a Director for its Disability Justice Initiative within its Rights and Justice department. The Director will be responsible for leading and managing the Disability Justice Initiative, which focuses on advocating for and advancing policies that enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families. This role involves overseeing research and policy development, leading advocacy efforts, and managing a team dedicated to promoting disability justice and ensuring equitable access to essential services and rights.

The ideal candidate will be deeply committed to advancing the rights of disabled people, with a proven track record in policy development and advocacy. They must have a working knowledge of disability justice and its 10 principles. The Director will drive strategic initiatives that push forward an affirmative policy agenda, work closely with internal and external stakeholders, and contribute to American Progress' broader mission to effect positive change in society. Candidates should also be guided by American Progress' mission to improve the lives of all Americans through bold, progressive ideas, as well as strong leadership and concerted action, with the aim of not only changing the conversation, but changing the country.

Responsibilities:

• Lead and manage the Disability Justice Initiative team, providing strategic direction, mentorship, and support. Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring the team meets its goals and objectives effectively, and foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment.
• Develop and advance a comprehensive policy agenda focused on protecting and expanding disability rights and equity by utilizing disability justice principles. Address key issues such as the intersection of disability and economic mobility, health care, reproductive rights, voting rights, LGBTQI+ rights, community safety, immigration, and racial equity.
• Collaborate with the Senior Vice President and senior leadership to set strategic priorities and direction for the Disability Justice Initiative. Develop long-term plans and initiatives to address systemic barriers and promote equity for disabled people.
• Oversee and conduct original quantitative and qualitative research to inform policy recommendations. Analyze legislation, administrative policies, and regulatory changes relevant to disability justice.
• Lead external engagement with primary stakeholdersincluding those in government and philanthropy.
• Lead policy advocacy efforts, including coalition activities, and represent American Progress in meetings, conferences, and public forums.
• Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including policymakers, advocacy organizations, and community leaders.
• Oversee the preparation of policy briefs, reports, articles, opinion pieces, and other materials. Develop and execute communication strategies to promote the initiative's work and raise awareness about disability justice issues.
• Plan, coordinate, and manage projects, meetings, and events related to disability policy, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery of research and advocacy materials. Handle project budgets and resources effectively.
• In managing the initiative's social media presence and digital outreach efforts, create and post content to engage with a broader audience.
• Follow local, state, and national political and policy conversations and make strategic recommendations for American Progress' engagement. Set and execute rapid-response research priorities in response to breaking news and significant moments surrounding issues affecting disabled people.
• Liaise with American Progress' senior management and other American Progress teamsin particular the Communications department and Creative teamto ensure disability justice is reflected in American Progress' public-facing communications and ideas.
• Working in collaboration with the Development department and senior leadership, lead fundraising activities that maintain current team funding and result in new sources of funding.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in public policy, social work, law, or a related field required; master's degree or equivalent experience is preferred.
• At least 7 to 10 years of experience in disability policy, advocacy, or related fields, with a demonstrated ability to lead teams and manage projects.
• Strong knowledge of disability rights laws and policies, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Medicaid, Social Security, and other relevant programs.
• Proven leadership skills, with experience in managing and mentoring a team. Ability to set strategic direction and inspire action.
• Staff management and leadership experience as well as a strong commitment to developing staff and creating a trusted, open, and supportive workplace culture.
• Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills. Ability to effectively present complex information to diverse audiences.
• Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook). Experience with social media platforms and digital content creation is a plus.
