Job description
The Mental Illness Recovery Center (MIRCI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping vulnerable adults and young adults experiencing or at risk of homelessness due to mental illness. Through comprehensive clinical, housing, and support services, MIRCI empowers individuals to achieve stability, independence, and lasting recovery. We are seeking a Director of Marketing and Community Relations to lead our marketing, communications, and community engagement efforts. Job Function:Under the direct supervision of the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Marketing and Community Relations communicates MIRCI's mission to the community-at-large, including potential clients, volunteers, donors, referral partners, media contacts, and other stakeholders. This position develops, organizes, implements, and evaluates marketing, public relations, communications, and special event strategies that strengthen public awareness of the organization, support fund development, and promote MIRCI's programs and services through print, digital, social media, website, media relations, events, and other communication channels. The position requires strong project management and organizational skills to coordinate multiple campaigns, events, timelines, vendors, internal stakeholders, and communication priorities simultaneously. Employee Classification:Considered a professional, exempt position that is a regular full-time non-supervisory role. Examples of Work:Develops and maintains a positive public image for MIRCI through consistent, mission-focused public-facing communication.Drafts, implements, and evaluates communications plans that include social and online media, print media, direct mail, email marketing, newsletters, website content, and other multimedia communication channels.Develops and implements special marketing campaigns to promote MIRCI programs, services, events, volunteer opportunities, and fundraising initiatives.Writes, reviews, edits, and distributes press releases, media advisories, newsletters, donor communications, event materials, website updates, and other public-facing communications.Manages MIRCI's social media presence, including Facebook, Instagram, and other approved platforms, ensuring content is accurate, engaging, timely, and aligned with organizational branding.Maintains and updates the organization's website to support public awareness, donor engagement, volunteer recruitment, event promotion, and accurate program information.Coordinates and produces electronic and printed newsletters, annual reports, brochures, flyers, invitations, sponsorship materials, and other promotional products.Plans, coordinates, promotes, and assists with execution of special events, including fundraising events, community awareness activities, donor cultivation events, volunteer activities, and other organizational events.Supports event logistics, including timelines, invitations, sponsorship recognition, promotional materials, vendor coordination, registration, signage, program materials, photography coordination, and post-event communication.Develops and manages project plans, timelines, task lists, calendars, budgets, and follow-up systems to ensure marketing campaigns, public relations activities, and special events are completed accurately and on schedule.Coordinates cross-functional projects by organizing meetings, tracking deliverables, documenting decisions, communicating next steps, and ensuring timely follow-through with staff, vendors, sponsors, volunteers, and community partners.Leads MIRCI's THRIVE Ambassador Program by coordinating ambassador activities, supporting internal engagement, promoting organizational values, and strengthening staff and community connection to MIRCI's mission.Collaborates with department managers to understand MIRCI services, client needs, community priorities, and communication needs.Prepares materials that support fundraising, donor stewardship, sponsorships, grant communication needs, and community engagement.Develops and maintains relationships with local and regional media outlets, community partners, nonprofit networks, chambers of commerce, local government representatives, and other stakeholders.Coordinates responses to media and public information requests in consultation with leadership and ensures communication is accurate, professional, and consistent with MIRCI's mission and confidentiality standards.Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including presentations, professional writing, editing, and mission-focused storytelling.Strong interpersonal and networking skills with the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with media contacts, community partners, volunteers, donors, sponsors, vendors, and staff.Knowledge of marketing, branding, public relations, media relations, event promotion, and nonprofit communications best practices.Ability to develop clear, attractive, and accurate print and digital materials using graphics, logos, photography, and other promotional tools consistent with organizational branding.Proficient with Microsoft 365 Office Suite and related software used to design marketing materials, manage social media content, maintain website updates, and support event coordination.Strong project management, organizational, and time-management skills, including the ability to establish priorities, manage calendars and timelines, coordinate multiple projects, track details, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing needs.Ability to create and maintain organized systems for project documentation, event planning, campaign tracking, media contacts, vendor information, sponsorship materials, and communication calendars.Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and confidentiality when communicating about clients, staff, donors, organizational priorities, and sensitive information.Ability to work collaboratively across departments and represent MIRCI professionally in community, media, donor, and public settings. Minimum Requirements:Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Journalism, Advertising, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field. Experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Two years of public relations, marketing, communications, event coordination, project management, or related nonprofit experience required.Three to five years of related experience writing and editing projects preferred; portfolio of relevant previous projects highly preferred. Design skills are a plus. Necessary Special Requirements:Must have a valid SC driver's license and a good driving record.
