Job description

Manager, Independent Study Program (ISP)

The Manager, Independent Study Program (ISP), supports the effective administration and delivery of the Whitney Museum's Independent Study Program. This role provides programmatic and operational support for the Director's office, including coordination of curriculum operations, twice-weekly seminars, studio visits, special events, public programming, admissions, and cross-departmental collaboration. The Manager works closely with visiting faculty, guest speakers, ISP participants across the Studio, Curatorial, and Critical Studies Programs, Museum departments, and ISP alumni to support the ongoing stewardship and successful execution of the program.

Responsibilities

  • Manages operations for ISP
  • Coordinates communication with the ISP Director's internal and external contacts
  • Offers programmatic support for visiting faculty and guest speaker's visits to the ISP
  • Offers programmatic support for ISP admissions process
  • Coordinates with participants of the ISP's Studio Program, Curatorial Program, and Critical Studies Program regarding their attendance/participation and research
  • Coordinates with Museum's Library, Archives & Special Collections regarding participants' research
  • Liaises with ISP alumni, including tracking of alumni directory/achievements and managing alumni communication in consultation with Museum's Communication
  • Tracks the ISP's operating budget in consultation with ISP Director's Office, Lichtenstein Studios staff, and Museum's Finance & Accounting
  • Facilitates payments for participating scholars and reimbursements related to program activity
  • Offers programmatic support for ISP Director's office
  • Strict adherence to confidentiality protocols when handling data, and organizational information.

Requirements

  • BA or BFA required, MA or MFA preferred (or comparable experience)
  • Three to five years of related work experience in an academic or museum context
  • Outstanding organizational and communication skills, with proven experience of work-place professionalism, including professional responsibility, integrity, judgement, and initiative
  • Ability to manage budgets in relation to strategic plans, along with concurrent timelines
  • (Preferred, not required) Related work experience at both academic and museum context
  • (Preferred, not required) Teaching experience at university level (or comparable pedagogical experience)
  • (Preferred, not required) Familiarity with research methodologies of contemporary art and curatorial practices and/or art history, literary studies, cultural studies, media studies, performance studies or related fields
  • (Preferred, not required) Familiarity or interest in ISP history and/or history of experimental art pedagogies

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range is $70,000-$75,000 and will be commensurate with experience
