Job description
The Program Coordinator's focus is on facilitating a Scouting experience for youth/participants that may not otherwise have the opportunity at partner sites or Base Camp. The Program Coordinator is a member of the Community Programs Team and may serve several different programs within the team.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIESProgram Facilitation (75% of time)The Lead Program Coordinator is expected to facilitate regular Scouting activities at identified program sites to which they are assigned or at Base Camp. The Program Coordinator is expected to plan and run a fun, engaging, and age-appropriate program which is focused on using Scouting materials and to present this program with enthusiasm in a context-sensitive manner. The Program Coordinator will work with supervisors and on-site program coordinators to appropriately manage behavior of youth in the program. Program Coordinators will be trained to run all Northern Star Scouting Community Programs.Program Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation (25% of time)Use designated time to prepare for upcoming programs (gathering materials, printing, etc.)Work to revise and improve program materials in existing areas.Works with District Director to review user feedback related to In-School programs and collaborates to identify solutions for areas requiring corrective action. SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIESCarry out other assignments given by supervisor or other designated staff.Work as a team member with other staff on joint programs.Maintain confidentiality of information dealing with youth, volunteers, staff, and all aspects of council business.Present a positive and professional attitude and image of Scouting while representing the council.Keep current files of all work.Participate in annual program planning.Take adequate time to prepare activities for each Scout activity and be on time for all meetings.Meet with supervisor regularly or as needed to monitor progress and ask questions if something about the job is not clear. Turn in documentation in a timely manner. Obtain advanced approval of supervisor for all outings and special activities. Update supervisor on activities, and on any issues or concerns. QUALIFICATIONSGeneral: Must be age 21 or older and proficient in English. Proficiency in Somali or Spanish is preferred though not required.Education: High school diploma or equivalent required, with some college preferred. Experience: Must have some experience working with urban youth ages 7-21 in education, youth development, recreation, social services, or after school/community programs. Scouting or other youth-service background is preferred though not required. Must be willing and able to complete required training and learn details of the Scouting programmunication and interpersonal skills: Effective interpersonal communications are needed to work with youth, adults, supervisor, and co-workers. Must be able to work with youth of diverse backgrounds and with community education partners. Must listen to others' needs and proactively respond appropriately. Must be an effective leader. Must be able to work independently as well as cooperatively and demonstrate apositive attitude. Must strive for consistent, quality, on-time communication with others. Must be able to complete required paperwork and keep accurate records.Technical skills: Computer and internet skills are needed as the employee will need to prepare various materials and reports and take some online training. Computer equipment is available at the council offices.Work mode: Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision after the initial 90-day training period. Must be able to identify and resolve problems and make decisions. Must be willing to serve as a positive role model for youth; must maintain a high standard of behavior and language that shows courtesy and respect for others.Work schedule: The position is scheduled to work 40 hours per week. Must be able to maintain regular attendance. Consistent schedule will be set by the District Director and will include weekdays, evenings, and weekends as demanded by workload or program calendar.Confidentiality: Must maintain confidentiality of all information pertaining to partners, participants, and council – including staffing, compensation, and all business information.Transportation: To serve some units, a Program Coordinator needs to have a personal vehicle that is reliable to reach the work sites. Pending submission of mileage reports and pending supervisor approval, mileage will be reimbursed at a rate no higher than the current IRS-approved guideline. Must provide proof of valid driver's license. Must carry automobile insurance at the levels of $100,000/$300,000/ $100,000. Must provide copy of proof of automobile insurance coverage each time it renews (typically every three or six months).Model the Ideals of Scouting: Represent the council in a positive way. Work cooperatively with leadership, coworkers, and others. Be able to make and keep commitments, completing assignments on time. Effectively manage time and organize work to achieve expected results. Be able to communicate expectations to others and manage several projects simultaneously. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTSMaterials and Equipment Used 100% of timeMotor vehicles (unless specified otherwise in employment letter), computers/printers, telephone, copiers, current technology tools, visual aids, council service center equipment, etc.Physical Activities and Requirements 100% of timeReaching, standing, walking, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, stretching, repetitive motions, computer keyboarding, driving a motor vehicle. While in office, work is usually sedentary. Occasional lifting of boxes, files, and equipment (up to 40 pounds). While working directly with youth, this position may have more physical requirements, possibly including lifting a youth member during the activities with or without assistance of another person.
