Job description

Manager - Regulatory Compliance, Quality and Sustainability

The primary function is to develop, implement, and manage Canal Barge Company's compliance programs. This role involves ensuring that the company adheres to all relevant laws, regulations, and standards. The Manager will function as the primary point of contact for regulatory bodies and will act as an advisor to business unit leaders on compliance matters. The position requires in-depth knowledge of industry regulations and effective communication skills to guide and inform various stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

A. Regulatory Oversight

  • Ensure compliance with U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Transportation, Environmental Protection Agency, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Maritime Administration, and Federal Maritime Organization requirements.
  • Monitor changes in laws, regulations, and industry standards and communicate updates to leadership team and staff.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain practices and processes to ensure compliance with all maritime, shipyard, and terminal regulations.

B. Audits & Inspections

  • Lead and coordinate internal and external compliance audits, inspections, and reviews.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records to demonstrate compliance.
  • Liaise with regulators, classification societies, and third-party auditors.

C. Safety & Environmental Management

  • Support environmental stewardship by ensuring adherence to pollution prevention, waste management, and sustainability practices.
  • Partner with Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) team to ensure alignment with safety standards in shipyard and terminal operations.

D. Training & Awareness

  • Develop and deliver compliance training programs for vessel crews, shipyard workers, and terminal staff.
  • Promote a strong compliance culture by raising awareness of company policies, ethical conduct, and industry requirements.

E. Risk Management

  • Identify compliance risks and implement proactive strategies to mitigate them.
  • Investigate incidents of non-compliance, recommend corrective actions, and ensure follow-through.

F. Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with operations, legal, and executive teams to support business goals while maintaining compliance.
  • Provide guidance during project planning and execution to ensure compliance requirements are integrated.

Other

Perform other duties as required and directed by the Vice President of Risk Management. Carry out the Business Philosophy, Code of Conduct, and Mission of Canal Barge Company.

Organizational Relationship

The Regulatory Compliance and Quality Coordinator reports to the Vice President of Risk Management and collaborates with all Business Unit Leaders.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, or another related field. Master's degree preferred but not required.
  • 7+ years of compliance, regulatory affairs, or risk management experience within maritime, shipyard, or terminal operations.
  • Proven track record of managing audits, inspections, and regulatory reporting.
  • Strong knowledge of maritime laws and regulations preferred.
  • Background in environmental compliance is required.
  • Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional (CCEP) or equivalent is preferred.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).

Physical Requirements

A. Mobility & Flexibility

Ability to move about shipyards, terminals, docks, and vessels, including climbing ladders, stairs, and gangways.

B. Walking & Standing

Prolonged periods of walking or standing during inspections, audits, and site visits.

C. Lifting & Carrying

Occasionally lift or carry items up to 25 pounds (e.g., safety equipment, inspection tools, or documents).

D. Balance & Coordination

Comfort working in environments with uneven surfaces, moving decks, confined spaces, or elevated areas.

E. Environmental Conditions

Ability to work in outdoor settings with exposure to varying weather, noise, dust, fumes, or industrial equipment.

F. Travel

Willingness to travel to vessels, shipyards, terminals, or regulatory offices as required.
