Job description

Human Resources Generalist

The Human Resources Generalist serves as an onsite HR Business Partner and employee relations representative for the Louisiana office. This position functions as an extension of the Human Resources team located at the corporate headquarters in Virginia and is responsible for providing professional HR support to local managers and employees while ensuring consistent application of organizational policies, procedures, and employment practices.

This position serves as the local HR resource for employee relations, onboarding, benefits administration, performance management support, leave administration, policy interpretation, compliance, employee engagement, and general HR operations.

While physically located in Louisiana, the Human Resources Generalist reports directly to the Senior Human Resources Generalist and works collaboratively with the Headquarters (HQ) Human Resources (HR) team to ensure consistency across the organization and maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws.

The following duties are representative of the work performed. Incumbents may not perform all duties listed and may be assigned additional responsibilities to meet organizational needs.

Employee Relations

  • Serve as the primary onsite Human Resources contact for managers and employees.
  • Build positive working relationships throughout the office by providing timely, professional, and confidential HR guidance.
  • Respond to employee questions regarding Human Resources policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Assist managers with employee performance concerns, coaching discussions, documentation, corrective actions, and conflict resolution.
  • Conduct or assist with employee investigations involving workplace concerns, policy violations, harassment, discrimination, or other employee relations matters in coordination with the HQ HR team.
  • Promote a respectful, inclusive, and positive workplace culture.
  • Identify employee relations trends and recommend proactive solutions.
  • Escalate complex employee relations matters to the Senior HR Generalist or Human Resources Manager as appropriate.

Onboarding and Employee Lifecycle

  • Coordinate all onsite new hire activities in partnership with the HQ HR team.
  • Facilitate new employee orientation and ensure a positive onboarding experience.
  • Complete employment eligibility verification (Form I-9/E-Verify) and other required employment documentation.
  • Coordinate workstation readiness and onboarding logistics with local management and Information Technology.
  • Ensure required onboarding documents are completed accurately and timely.
  • Conduct HR check-ins during the first six weeks of employment to support new hire engagement, address questions or concerns, and promote a successful transition into the organization.
  • Support employee transfers, status changes, promotions, compensation changes, and offboarding activities under the direction of HQ HR leadership.
  • Conduct exit interviews and communicate trends or recommendations to Human Resources leadership.

Benefits Administration

  • Serve as the local point of contact for employee benefit questions and enrollment assistance.
  • Assist employees with benefit enrollment, qualifying life events, and general benefits information.
  • Support the annual Open Enrollment process.
  • Support Wellness Challenges.
  • Coordinate benefit communications between employees and the HQ HR team.
  • Assist HQ HR regarding employee leave requests and coordinate documentation related to Family and Medical Leave (FMLA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodations, paid leave programs, workers' compensation, and other leave programs in conjunction with the HQ HR team.

Human Resources Administration

  • Maintain accurate employee records and ensure confidentiality of personnel information.
  • Assist with Human Resources reporting, recordkeeping, and electronic personnel files.
  • Ensure compliance with required employment notices and workplace postings.
  • Monitor completion of required compliance and professional development training.
  • Support Human Resources audits and compliance initiatives.
  • Assist with policy implementation and employee communication efforts.
  • Recommend process improvements that increase efficiency and employee service.

Performance Management

  • Support managers and employees throughout the performance management process.
  • Assist with performance reviews, performance improvement plans, employee development planning, and goal setting.
  • Provide coaching to managers regarding Human Resources best practices and organizational expectations.
  • Monitor completion of required performance management activities.

Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Assist with Human Resources compliance initiatives, audits, and documentation.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive employee and organizational information.
  • Stay current on employment law developments impacting assigned responsibilities.
  • Ensure consistent application of Human Resources policies and procedures.

Employee Engagement

  • Assist in planning and coordinating employee recognition programs, engagement activities, and office events.
  • Support employee communications and organizational culture initiatives.
  • Encourage employee participation in organizational programs and activities.
  • Partner with managers to identify opportunities to improve employee engagement and retention.
  • Assist with stay interviews to identify employee concerns, engagement opportunities, and retention risks.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with the HQ HR team to ensure consistency in Human Resources practices across the organization.
  • Participate in regular Human Resources meetings and training.
  • Provide recommendations regarding local workforce trends, employee concerns, and operational improvements.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with managers across all departments.
  • Serve as a trusted Human Resources business partner while supporting organizational objectives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of Human Resources principles, practices, and employment laws.
  • Working knowledge of federal and Louisiana employment regulations.
  • Strong employee relations and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and relationship-building abilities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Experience working with Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS), ADP Workforce Now preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with HQ HR team members.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to Headquarters or other office locations for meetings or training.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible Human Resources Generalist experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Leadership, or a related field OR additional four (4) years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated, successful experience supporting employee relations
  • Experience in ensuring successful Human Resources operations.
  • Demonstrated success in interpreting and applying employment policies and procedures.

Preferred

  • Professional Human Resources certification (SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR).
  • Experience supporting a workforce with diverse types of roles and responsibilities.
  • Experience with Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS), applicant tracking systems, and electronic personnel records.
  • Experience supporting government contracting, nonprofit, engineering, consulting, or professional services organizations.
