Job description
Sterile Processing Technician

Location: Richmond, VA
Duration: 14 weeks
Schedule: 2nd Shift: 3:00 PM–11:30 PM | 3rd Shift: 11:30 PM–7:30 AM
Hours: 40 hours/week
Pay Rate: $24–$30/hour

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Sterile Processing Technician to support the decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, and maintenance of surgical instruments and equipment.

The technician will ensure compliance with infection control standards, manufacturer Instructions for Use (IFUs), ANSI/AAMI standards, SOPs, and established work procedures while maintaining a clean, organized, and efficient work environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Assemble surgical instrument trays accurately according to established procedures.
  • Operate washer disinfectors, autoclaves, and other sterilization equipment.
  • Perform steam sterilization and other approved sterilization processes.
  • Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, damage, and missing components.
  • Identify and report damaged or missing instruments.
  • Maintain accurate sterilization, inventory, and processing records.
  • Follow manufacturer IFUs, ANSI/AAMI standards, SOPs, and work instructions.
  • Maintain infection control and quality assurance standards.
  • Ensure instruments and equipment are handled appropriately throughout the processing cycle.
  • Maintain an efficient workflow and meet required processing deadlines.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Follow all applicable safety, quality, and compliance procedures.
Required Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
Required Certifications
  • CRCST, CIS, or equivalent Sterile Processing certification
  • BLS certification from AHA
Required Skills & Experience
  • Minimum 1 year of hands-on sterile processing experience.
  • Experience with instrument decontamination, inspection, assembly, and sterilization.
  • Knowledge of surgical instruments and sterile processing procedures.
  • Familiarity with ANSI/AAMI standards and manufacturer IFUs.
  • Experience operating washer disinfectors, autoclaves, and sterilization equipment.
  • Knowledge of steam sterilization and infection control practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality assurance skills.
  • Ability to read and follow detailed SOPs and work instructions.
  • Basic computer and electronic data system proficiency.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Professional, reliable, and collaborative work ethic.
Compliance Requirements
  • Must be able to complete all required onboarding and compliance requirements prior to starting the assignment.
  • Must be willing to complete required health screenings and vaccinations.
