The Field & Shop Manager plans, coordinates, and supports work performed by company field crews across active projects, including general requirements, interior and exterior carpentry, scaffolding, cleanup, equipment support, selective demolition, selective civil work, concrete, and related scopes. This position works closely with the Production Manager and General Foreman, as well as Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, Safety, and company leadership, to ensure crews are properly staffed, equipped, productive, and prepared to execute work safely and profitably.
Key Responsibilities Field Planning, Production & Leadership
- Plan and coordinate company-performed work, including labor, equipment, tools, materials, access, sequencing, logistics, and daily priorities.
- Work closely with the Production Manager and General Foreman on company-wide staffing, crew assignments, production goals, foreman support, and field personnel development.
- Support general requirements across all projects and oversee company-performed carpentry, scaffolding, cleanup, equipment support, selective demolition, selective civil work, concrete, and related scopes.
- Visit jobsites regularly to monitor production, labor performance, safety, quality, resource needs, and field issues; take corrective action when needed.
- Promote consistent planning, housekeeping, documentation, accountability, and productive field practices across projects.
Shop, Fleet, Equipment & Yard
- Manage the shop, warehouse, equipment yard, fleet, tools, scaffolding, materials, PPE, consumables, and related support functions.
- Maintain effective inspection, preventive maintenance, repair, certification, registration, inventory, and asset-control programs for company vehicles and equipment.
- Prioritize repairs, fabrication, loading, deliveries, returns, mobilization, demobilization, and movement of company assets between projects.
- Monitor equipment utilization, rentals, maintenance costs, and operational demand; recommend purchases, repairs, replacements, rentals, or disposals as appropriate.
Project Support, Cost Control & Coordination
- Coordinate with project teams during preconstruction, startup, execution, and closeout to establish realistic labor, equipment, material, and logistics plans.
- Provide input for estimating, budgeting, scheduling, crew composition, productivity, equipment needs, and means and methods for company-performed work.
- Track labor performance, production, equipment use, rentals, repairs, material consumption, asset locations, and other direct-work and support costs.
- Maintain clear communication with project teams and leadership regarding staffing, schedule impacts, production concerns, equipment readiness, shop priorities, and resource needs.
Safety & Company Leadership
- Ensure field and shop activities comply with company policies, OSHA requirements, contractual obligations, and established safety and quality standards.
- Confirm crews have the proper plans, training, PPE, tools, equipment, and materials before work begins, while promoting stop-work authority and personal accountability.
- Partner with Safety and project leadership on inspections, incidents, corrective actions, training needs, and operational risk.
- Maintain productive relationships with vendors, rental companies, repair facilities, suppliers, and service providers.
Experience, Skills & Certifications
- Minimum 10 years of commercial construction experience, including 10 years in a similar field leadership, shop management, equipment management, or construction-support role.
- Strong experience supervising field crews and coordinating general requirements and company-performed construction scopes.
- Strong background in automotive and construction-equipment repair, troubleshooting, maintenance, and diagnostics, including fleet and preventive-maintenance programs.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, schedules, work plans, equipment manuals, and technical information.
- Strong Microsoft Excel, typing, email, and general computer skills, with the ability to maintain accurate digital records and reports.
- Strong written and verbal communication, leadership, organization, planning, problem-solving, and accountability skills; formal leadership training or certification preferred.
- Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record required; CDL preferred.
- Forklift operator certification required or ability to obtain promptly after hire.
- Massachusetts and Rhode Island Hoisting Licenses and Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License (CSL) preferred.
- OSHA 10-Hour Construction certification or higher required; OSHA 30-Hour Construction preferred.
