Job description

Job Title: Dx Software Development Test Engineer (SDET)

Duration: Contract-to-hire

Location: Hybrid 2-3 days onsite every 2 weeks in Mendota Heights, MN. Must currently be local to MN to be considered.

  • Secondary objective is to establish Azure DevOps testing processes for UAT, including standardized naming conventions, documented test scenarios, and traceability of changes. Business users will select the appropriate test scenario and execute UAT to validate functionality prior to deployment.
  • Utilize Azure DevOps to manage test scenarios, track testing progress, and document UAT results.

Must have Azure DevOps experience. Having C# & Python is strongly preferred. Need someone who can hit the ground running & take ownership; someone who is a strong problem solver.

Position Overview

  • The Driver Experience (Dx) quality engineering function validates the software solutions that power RTI oil delivery operations, including the Driver Experience mobile application, Delivery Routing System (DRS), truck-based telemetry, routing and dispatch workflows, supporting databases, backend services, and enterprise integrations.
  • This function helps ensure field technology, operational workflows, mobile usability, telemetry visibility, delivery execution, and connected enterprise processes work reliably for drivers, depot teams, dispatchers, operations leaders, and downstream business systems.
  • The Dx Software Development Test Engineer is responsible for quality planning, test execution, defect management, release validation, and continuous improvement across the Driver Experience ecosystem. The role works closely with Dx Product Owners, Business Systems Analysts, Software Engineers, Fleet Operations, Routing, Dispatch, Depot Operations, Field Operations, and integration partners to confirm that new and changed capabilities meet business expectations before release.
  • The ideal candidate combines hands-on enterprise software testing experience with strong operational curiosity, mobile application testing discipline, integration testing skill, and the ability to understand how driver workflows, routing logic, telemetry data, and mobile devices work together in the field. This role has the physical requirement of occasionally lifting to 50lbs.

Quality Engineering Responsibilities

  • Own quality engineering activities across the full SDLC, including test strategy, test planning, test case design, test execution, defect management, release validation, production smoke testing, and post-release verification.
  • Develop and maintain clear, repeatable test assets in Azure DevOps Test Plans, including test plans, test suites, reusable test cases, shared steps, test configurations, traceability to user stories and requirements, and documented evidence of execution.
  • Partner with Product Owners, Project Owners, Business Systems Analysts, Engineers, Scrum Masters, Agile Delivery Leads, and business stakeholders to translate requirements and acceptance criteria into risk-based test coverage.
  • Execute functional, integration, regression, smoke, exploratory, end-to-end, UAT support, and production validation testing for assigned applications and integrated workflows.
  • Identify, document, triage, prioritize, and retest defects using Jira, Azure DevOps, or similar tools, ensuring clear reproduction steps, expected results, actual results, business impact, screenshots, logs, and evidence are captured.
  • Support sprint planning, backlog refinement, release planning, deployment readiness, cutover preparation, and go/no-go discussions by providing quality status, risk assessments, dependency notes, and defect trends.
  • Collaborate with developers and technical leads to reproduce issues, validate root cause, confirm fixes, strengthen acceptance criteria, and improve testability of new and existing solutions.
  • Design and evolve regression suites that protect critical business flows, high-risk integrations, data movement, role-based workflows, and release-sensitive capabilities.
  • Contribute to automation strategy by identifying high-value automation candidates, partnering with engineers on automated test coverage, and maintaining clear handoff between manual, exploratory, and automated testing.
  • Promote quality standards, documentation discipline, traceability, test data readiness, environment readiness, and continuous improvement across Agile delivery squads.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Dx Testing Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain test coverage for Driver Experience mobile workflows, DRS routing and dispatch processes, truck telemetry, delivery execution, depot handoffs, field support processes, and backend service interactions.
  • Validate mobile device behavior across supported device types, operating system versions, network conditions, offline or store-and-forward scenarios, login flows, route start and completion workflows, exception handling, and field usability concerns.
  • Test routing, dispatch, delivery, telemetry, and operations workflows across integrated systems including ERP, telemetry services, APIs, operational reporting, and downstream analytics platforms.
  • Coordinate test data and environment readiness for lower environments, mobile device configurations, truck technology simulations, telemetry event scenarios, integration endpoints, and operational dashboards.
  • Validate observability, monitoring, alerting, dashboard, and support tooling requirements for route execution visibility, truck health, device connectivity, telemetry exceptions, and delivery-impacting incidents.
  • Partner with field operations, depot operations, and product stakeholders to support UAT, field pilot readiness, issue reproduction, production smoke testing, and post-release validation of critical driver workflows.

Direct Collaboration

  • Dx Product Owners and Business Systems Analysts
  • Driver Experience mobile application development team
  • Delivery Routing System and dispatch operations partners
  • Software engineers, architects, development test engineers, and IT operations
  • Fleet Operations, Depot Operations, Field Operations, and driver support partners
  • Integration, Data, Analytics, Reporting, Security, and Service Desk teams
  • External and Vendor Partners
  • Mobile device, telematics, routing, telemetry, hardware, and third-party technology partners as assigned
  • Implementation or consulting partners supporting Dx initiatives

Core Quality Engineering Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Business, or a related field, or equivalent professional work experience.
  • 7+ years of software quality assurance, test engineering, SDET, enterprise application testing, or related IT delivery experience; senior-level experience in complex, integrated environments preferred.
  • Deep proven expertise with Azure DevOps Test Plans, including creating and maintaining test plans, test suites, test cases, test configurations, execution evidence, traceability, and reporting.
  • Strong experience with project and issue tracking tools such as Jira or similar tools, including backlog visibility, defect workflow management, sprint coordination, dashboards, and issue hygiene.
  • Strong knowledge of SDLC, STLC, Agile, Scrum, Kanban, CI/CD, release management, change control, regression planning, UAT coordination, and production validation practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret business requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, process flows, technical designs, interface specifications, data mappings, and release notes.
  • Experience testing APIs, integrations, data movement, role-based security, workflows, batch or scheduled processes, dashboards, reports, and upstream/downstream system dependencies.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills with the ability to isolate defects, identify patterns, communicate risk, and recommend pragmatic quality improvements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write clear test cases, defect reports, quality summaries, release notes, and stakeholder updates.
  • High ownership mindset, attention to detail, curiosity, resilience, accountability, and ability to operate effectively in ambiguity while balancing project delivery and production support priorities.

Role-Specific Technical Skills

  • Experience testing mobile applications, routing and dispatch systems, operational workflows, field device scenarios, telemetry-driven processes, and backend services.
  • Understanding of mobile device management, device compatibility, network variability, offline or intermittent connectivity testing, store-and-forward behavior, and field support considerations.
  • Experience validating RESTful and SOAP APIs, enterprise integrations, event-driven workflows, SQL databases, operational dashboards, and data quality across connected systems.
  • Working understanding of telemetry, truck-based technology, route execution, dispatch operations, depot operations, operational support processes, and production incident response.
  • Experience with observability, monitoring, dashboard validation, alert testing, log review, and support handoff documentation is preferred.
  • Experience with test automation tools, API testing tools, SQL, mobile testing tools, and CI/CD pipelines is preferred.
