Job description

Director, Artificial Intelligence Policy

Mastercard powers economies and empowers people in 200+ countries and territories worldwide. Together with our customers, we're helping build a sustainable economy where everyone can prosper. We support a wide range of digital payments choices, making transactions secure, simple, smart and accessible. Our technology and innovation, partnerships and networks combine to deliver a unique set of products and services that help people, businesses and governments realize their greatest potential.

Mastercard is a technology company in the financial services industry. We operate the world's fastest payments processing network, connecting consumers, financial institutions, digital wallet providers, merchants, governments and businesses in more than 210 countries and territories. Mastercard's Global Policy team is responsible for developing all Mastercard policy positions and working with regional government affairs teams to execute advocacy on those positions. The Global Policy Team embeds and works with key business units to understand priorities and products, identifies and interprets the impact of emerging policy trends and developments, and articulates new policy frameworks aligned with Mastercard's business. The Global Policy team partners across Mastercard to help shape and execute against our strategy, working cross-functionally across a global organization. We demonstrate decency and personal accountability to help lead the business forward through hands-on engagement, partnership and strategic value creation. We work hand-in-hand with Mastercard Government Affairs as a part of the larger Government Affairs & Policy team and also work closely with Regulatory, Legal, Privacy and other internal teams to ensure all of Mastercard is aligned around distinct policy positions and perspectives as policymakers, regulators, standards bodies and external stakeholders are engaged.

The Director of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy will work internally and externally to enhance the ongoing development of policy that supports Mastercard's use and deployment of AI products, services and tools, and Mastercard's Services organization at large. This position will work closely with internal stakeholders to develop policy positioning and engagement to shape and influence AI legislation, regulation and standards bodies around the world and especially in core Mastercard markets. This position will report to the SVP of Global Services Policy. The ideal candidate must thrive in a fast-paced environment and with a diverse workload. The candidate must have extensive experience providing both tactical and strategic advice to both regulators and internal executive level business professionals. This position may be based out of our New York or UK (London) offices.

Director, AI Policy responsibilities:

  • Support ongoing development of AI Policy positions and core narratives around Mastercard's deployment and use of AI.
  • Build subject matter expertise on AI policy issues, standards and developments to provide insight to government affairs teams and advocacy endeavors.
  • Work closely with SVP of Services Policy to explain and disseminate AI policy positions to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Embed with Services business units and internal stakeholders deploying AI solutions to develop deep understanding of business objectives.
  • Serve as a two-way interpretive AI policy layer for Mastercard Services - Providing insight and explanation of AI policy and industry developments and their impact on Mastercard Services use of AI.
  • Converting AI business objectives into policy narratives and positions for use in advocacy.
  • Digest and disseminate complex legislative, regulatory, standards and industry developments that impact AI Services policy to internal stakeholders.
  • Support thought leadership objectives at relevant conferences, events and industry engagements.
  • Anticipate emerging AI policy risks (e.g., model governance, data use rights, cybersecurity implications, agentic applications, etc.)
  • Develop high-quality materials, including: policy briefs, decks, explainers, strategy memos, issue trackers and executive briefing materials.
  • Engage and hold positions in international and regional AI standards bodies impacting Mastercard's deployment and use of AI.
  • Work cross-functionally to respond to regulatory and industry consultations.
  • Advance coherent, principle-based AI policy positions across jurisdictions that are risk-based, innovation-enabling, not overly prescriptive and aligned with specific use cases.

About You:

  • A robust understanding of Artificial Intelligence systems, models and their deployment across the financial services industry today.
  • Previous experience in AI policy, governance and/or regulation
  • Deep knowledge of existing and emerging technical standards underpinning artificial intelligence models and systems (i.e. ISO/IEC, NIST, IEEE, etc.)
  • Ability to connect technical AI concepts to policy and regulatory frameworks
  • Strong writing and communication skills with experience producing policy documents
  • Previous positions and experience in public policy, regulatory affairs or government affairs.
  • Experience working across cross functional teams and disciplines
  • Ability to analyze and manage complex issues
  • Highly confident and a problem solver able to tackle unfamiliar situations
  • Work towards setting clear objectives and working collaboratively
  • Ability to multi-task effectively in a fast-paced team environment
  • Must have strong communication skills across all stakeholders
  • Proven experience working in a global role at a multinational company
