Job description

Join a highly technical engineering team developing advanced software solutions that support next-generation modeling, simulation, and training systems. We are seeking an experienced Software Engineering Lead to provide technical leadership for the architecture, design, development, and integration of complex software components while mentoring a team of software engineers.

This role is ideal for an accomplished software engineer who enjoys balancing hands-on development with technical leadership. The successful candidate will drive software architecture decisions, oversee development teams, participate in proposal efforts, and ensure projects are delivered on schedule while maintaining high standards for software quality, performance, and maintainability.

Key Responsibilities Technical Leadership

  • Lead the architecture, design, development, and maintenance of one or more complex Computer Software Configuration Items (CSCIs).
  • Provide technical leadership for teams of approximately 2–10 software engineers.
  • Assign work, monitor technical progress, and proactively resolve obstacles affecting project execution.
  • Conduct software design reviews and code reviews while ensuring technical feedback is addressed.
  • Make architectural decisions that promote scalability, maintainability, and long-term product success.
  • Ensure compliance with software engineering standards, development processes, and configuration management practices.
  • Provide project status updates, technical risk assessments, and estimate-to-complete forecasts to program leadership.
  • Mentor junior engineers while supporting the professional development of the engineering team.
  • Contribute technical solutions, architectures, and labor estimates for proposal efforts.

Software Development

  • Design, develop, modify, integrate, and maintain complex software applications and components.
  • Translate customer requirements into well-designed software solutions.
  • Develop software using industry best practices, object-oriented design principles, and modern software engineering methodologies.
  • Perform unit testing and support integration, verification, and validation activities.
  • Develop and document software test procedures to satisfy customer and program requirements.
  • Leverage reusable software components and approved open-source technologies to improve development efficiency.
  • Maintain accurate task estimates, schedules, and progress reporting throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Support software configuration management and version control processes.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams throughout system development and integration.
  • Support occasional domestic and international travel as program requirements dictate.
  • Work extended hours when necessary to support critical project milestones.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 10+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading software engineering teams or serving as a technical lead.
  • Strong experience developing software within Linux and/or Windows environments.
  • Expert-level proficiency in modern programming languages and software development practices.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, object-oriented design, and software design patterns.
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum software development methodologies.
  • Experience developing software from customer requirements through implementation and testing.
  • Experience with software configuration management tools and version control systems.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lead technical discussions and mentor software engineers.
  • Basic understanding of linear algebra and mathematical concepts applicable to software development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance, if required.
  • Must be eligible to comply with U.S. export control regulations.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience developing software for modeling, simulation, or training systems.
  • Experience supporting full-motion flight simulators, avionics systems, instructor/operator stations, electronic control loaders, or server-based simulation platforms.
  • Experience developing or integrating AR, VR, XR, or mixed reality applications.
  • Experience with Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS), Semi-Automated Forces (SAF), image generators, flight dynamics models, or data link simulation systems.
  • Experience designing interoperable simulation architectures and real-time rendering systems.
  • Experience using tools such as:
    • Visual Studio
    • GNU Toolchain
    • Eclipse
    • Atlassian Jira
    • Confluence
    • Bitbucket
    • Jama
  • Experience supporting defense, aerospace, or government software development programs.

Preferred Technical Environment
Candidates with experience in one or more of the following environments are highly desirable:

  • Linux and Windows development
  • Visual Studio
  • GNU Toolchain
  • Eclipse
  • Atlassian Jira
  • Atlassian Confluence
  • Atlassian Bitbucket
