Job Summary

The purpose of this program is to provide in-home respite services with behavioral supports, relieving parents, family members, and caregivers of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities from the responsibility of providing care, while ensuring the individual's specialized behavioral needs are met. Standard in-home respite is at times insufficient, as some individuals engage in challenging behaviors, including severe self-care deficits, social-communicative challenges, and problematic behavior. In these cases, the Behavior Technician (Paraprofessional) provides non-medical respite care while implementing behavior intervention strategies designed to reduce challenging behavior and increase basic daily living skills. The Behavior Technician (Paraprofessional) practices under the direct supervision of a certified Behavior Analyst and implements instructional and environmental modifications to produce socially significant improvements in the individual's behavior through skill acquisition and behavior reduction.

Job Responsibilities

  • Providing 1:1 in-home, non-medical respite care with behavioral supports to relieve family members and caregivers
  • Implementing behavior support/intervention plans designed by a certified Behavior Analyst
  • Implementing instructional and environmental modifications to produce socially significant improvements through skill acquisition and behavior reduction
  • Implementing evidence-based (ABA) strategies and techniques
  • Collecting and recording behavioral data, completing daily logs and summation notes, and supporting progress monitoring toward goals and objectives
  • Interfacing and collaborating with parents, caregivers, and the supervising behavior analyst
  • Participating in scheduled supervision, planning, teaming, and coordination with other service providers, when applicable
  • Utilizing approved non-violent crisis strategies consistent with the approved crisis management plan
  • Verifying service delivery through the agency's Electronic Visit Verification (EVV) process
  • Reporting special incidents (SIR) to the agency and regional center within required timeframes
  • Maintaining consumer records in accordance with HIPAA
  • Completing all required new-hire and ongoing annual trainings

Skills & Knowledge

  • Knowledge of developmental disabilities
  • Knowledge of Titles 17 and 22, including the definition and scope of in-home respite per Title 17, CCR, Division 2, Subchapter 3
  • Knowledge of services for people with developmental disabilities and the developmental services system (e.g., DDS, regional centers, the IPP process)
  • Knowledge and skills related to behavior support plan implementation, including antecedent strategies, replacement behavior teaching, and consequence-based procedures
  • Knowledge and skills related to basic ABA principles and strategies (behavior reduction, skill acquisition/teaching)
  • Knowledge and skills related to behavioral data collection and documentation
  • Knowledge of crisis management guidelines and non-violent crisis prevention/intervention procedures
  • Knowledge of mandated reporting, Zero Tolerance, Special Incident Reporting, Risk Mitigation, and Clients' Rights requirements

Attributes

  • Client-Centered: Demonstrates understanding that clients are individuals with unique needs and preferences, treats clients with dignity and respect, and safeguards client confidentiality
  • Ethical: Implements recommended evidence-based (ABA) support plan strategies with fidelity, even in the face of family, service provider, or developmental service system barriers
  • Professional: Provides services in a manner consistent with BACB professional guidelines
  • Self-Motivated: Initiates and completes routine job tasks accurately and on time with infrequent direction and prompts
  • Collaborative: Works effectively with fellow employees, the supervising behavior analyst, and external stakeholders (e.g., family members, service providers, regional center) to address needs or resolve issues in a professional and timely manner
