Job description

Director Of Life Enrichment

We are hiring a Director of Life Enrichment who develops and implements programs and services which support the wellness and life enrichment of residents. Provides leadership, direction, and supervision of the Activities Department. Oversees and implements programs and events that encourage the social, emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual development of residents as an integral part of their total care. Oversees quality of service of the Activities Department and ensures continual operations in compliance with Federal and State regulations as well as Sequoia Living policies and procedures.

What You Will Do:

  • Develops short- and long-term goals and objectives in consultation with community management and consistent with Sequoia Living Mission, Vision, Core Values and Commitment to Inclusion. Fosters an environment of employee engagement and resident satisfaction.
  • Interviews, hires, supervises, trains, motivates, and provides performance management of Activities Department staff and Drivers; provides oversight to volunteers.
  • Ensures compliance with administrative, legal, regulatory, governmental, and accrediting agency requirements for health care organization management. Implements Sequoia Living and community policies and procedures accordingly. Creates, implements, maintains, and ensures compliance with Activity Department policies, procedures, and manuals.

Participates in community and Sequoia Living policy planning and is responsible for maintaining the community's activities policy and procedure manuals. Oversees and directs all activities functions to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of the residents. Develops a departmental structure; assigns responsibility and delegates authority. Establishes staffing needs and monthly time schedules based on activities. Manages and oversees the Fitness Center, ensures the equipment and machines are appropriate and up to date for the residents. Trains residents on the equipment in the Fitness Center. Provides personal training when requested. Creates programming in conjunction with Physical Therapy (TAM) to help with Fall Prevention. Oversees group recreational programs and individual activities and ensures they are meaningful, have variety, and are utilized. Encourages social communication amongst residents through planned group activities. Uses monthly themes, birthdays, and anniversaries to create programming. Develops and ensures a full range of group exercise and aquatics classes are offered; including, but not limited to, aerobics, strength, flexibility, range of motion training, balance, and meditation. Ensures regular opportunities for worship for residents in all levels of care by seeking out the individual spiritual interests from those in all levels of care and securing material resources, transportation services, and clergy/spiritual leaders from the outside. Establishes and maintains volunteer groups; directs and coordinates their activities. Educates and trains volunteers to implement services and programs for residents. Schedules vendors and volunteers accordingly. Oversees assessments and completes documentation of medical records, including a comprehensive resident activity assessment, a portion of the Minimum Data Set, and quarterly progress notes to ensure full compliance with all state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to activities and psycho-social services (TAM). Oversees and maintains current records, plans, reports, and evaluations of the program and resident participation and functioning. Oversees all transportation needs for Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care (VIA) resident requests and physician appointments; including but not limited to the following: schedules drivers to drop off and pick up prescriptions and labs (TAM); oversees vehicle maintenance and budget in conjunction with Maintenance Department; responsible for campus calendar including scheduling and transport for special group outings. Orients and trains staff on vehicle safety. Presents in-service training to staff regarding activity program; participates in planning conferences and quality assessment assurance. Acts as staff liaison for the Special Events, Fitness, Dance Committee, and any appropriate committees (VIA) and Sequoia Living initiatives by coordinating required material and personnel resources, reserving meeting space, overseeing the event, and being the point of contact for external stakeholders. Participates and provides entertainment in community outreach activities to market the Tamalpais/Viamonte. Acts as liaison between family members and the Tamalpais /Viamonte for Celebration of Life Services by working closely with the Director of Resident Services, Food Service, and Housekeeping and assisting in the reservation of venue space, catering services, seating set up, and assisting families and staff in the coordination of a meaningful event. Oversees distribution of resident mail for the Health Center (TAM), Assisted Living, and Memory Care. Assists in the preparation of the Activities Department's operating budget recommendations, monitors expenditures, approves charges, establishes priorities for expenditures, and prepares budget variance analysis. Schedules and processes billing for Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care (VIA) physical activity programs. Oversees department workplace safety and risk control programs to ensure employees are provided education and training regarding safe work practices and occupational exposure. Ensures all workplace injuries are reported and investigated in a timely and thorough manner in accordance to Sequoia Living procedures. Works with Human Resources and employees regarding Return-to-Work programs, Workers' Compensation, and Leave of Absence requests. Recognizes and reports concerns regarding residents' physical, mental, and/or emotional status to a member of Management Staff. Performs other work as assigned.

Who You Are:

  • Knowledge of OBRA regulations, Title 22 and Division 5 and 6 California Administrative Code in regard to the provision of activities and social services. Comprehensive knowledge of activities programs and techniques associated with the scope and complexity of care required by residents served. Knowledge of and access to community resources. Knowledge of and willingness to discover activities and programs appropriate for residents.
  • Ability to determine a resident's ability to participate in activities. Ability to interpret complex laws, regulations, and policies. Ability to act with patience, tact, and courtesy in dealing with residents, their families, staff, and vendors under demanding and difficult conditions. Sensitivity to and understanding of issues related to aging, bereavement, grief, and loss.
  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Recreation Therapy, or a related field or equivalent experience. Minimum of two (2) years recent experience in a social or recreational program, completion of ARF Activities Leadership Training course approved by the state of California and all other requirements under Federal and State laws for the position. Must be CPR, AED, and First Aid certified. Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Certified Senior Fitness Instructor and a Fitness Leader for Adults with Special Needs from the American Senior Fitness Association and board-certified Senior Fitness Specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Zumba Gold and Piloxing certifications, Aquatics Instructor certification through SCW Fitness, and Kickboxing and Group Fitness Instructor certification through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America preferred. Experience in aging or related services preferred. Experience in a skilled nursing environment is highly desirable.
