JOB SUMMARY:
Works under the supervision of the Director of Pharmacy. Ensures smooth operation of pharmaceutical care delivery, including clinical, financial, administrative and information systems operations in Pharmacy. Plans, organizes, coordinates and controls workflow. Hires and trains appropriate staff. Communicates internally with Pharmacy Management team and acts as liaison with physicians and hospital personnel. Consistently maintains compliance with Pharmacy state and federal regulations. Utilizes hospital and community resources to meet
operational needs. Performs duties of Director of Pharmacy in their absence.
PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:
1. Works closely with Director of Pharmacy and management team in planning direction of pharmacy, preparing annual budget and setting yearly goals and objectives for the department. Defines relationships and drafts job descriptions for staff supervised.
2. Provides leadership and supervision regarding departmental performance by completing evaluations, maintaining staff competency and development, adequate staffing, and assures all work in specified areas is completed while maintaining a high level of quality. Works closely with Director of Pharmacy in disciplining and terminating staff. Follows progressive disciplinary procedures and takes appropriate action according to guidelines.
3. Directs pharmacy operations, ensures staffing is proportional to the scope of services. Maintains appropriate staffing level at all times. Recruits, interviews, and hires staff as approved by Director of Pharmacy.
4. Assess workload demands and coordinates work schedules for all pharmacy personnel. Monitors workload statistics.
5. Prevents unsafe and unsanitary practices and conditions. Establishes systems that ensure confidentiality of patient information using HIPAA related guidelines.
6. Complies with all applicable State and Federal laws, rules and regulations in addition to USP 797 and The Joint Commission (TJC) standards. Maintains inventory records for all medications including those required for controlled substances.
7. Develops, implements, and coordinates pharmacy operations in collaboration with associated department services. Coordinates development, implementation, and maintenance of medication distribution systems.
Ensures pharmacy services are provided in a timely manner. Coordinates maintenance of pharmacy space, storage, furniture, fixtures, and computer hardware/software.
8. Supervises Pharmacy Biller. Ensures preparation and submission of patient charges and financial reports to administration in accordance with policy. Monitors and updates charge master in coordination with Director of Pharmacy to ensure 100% captured revenue.
9. Works closely with Pharmacy management team to consistently review purchasing contracts, formulary, charge master and drug expenditures. Participates in selection of vendors for outsourced supplies and services.
10. Recommends enhancements or changes to computer hardware/software, pneumatic tube systems, bar coding, robot usage and other key systems & technology. Plans and directs projects to meet defined needs for pharmacy operations. Controls and monitors achievement of projects and objectives within approved budgets. Develops performance standards and measures results. Works with the Pharmacy Technology Coordinator in the oversight of Automated Dispensing Machine system.
11. Follows accepted practices of the American Society of Healthcare System Pharmacists (ASHP) Minimum Standards for Pharmacies in Hospitals. Participates in the development and monitoring of a program that improves the quality of pharmacy services and supports the QI plan of the organization. Works closely with the Director of Pharmacy and the Pharmacy management team as well as hospital management to maintain compliance with TJC, State and Federal guidelines.
12. Participates in internal and external systems Users Groups (i.e., electronic healthcare record, pharmacy automation, bar coding, etc.) to plan for and stay current with technological advances in the control and delivery of pharmaceutical care.
13. Maintains professional competency by participating in educational opportunities internally and through professional associations.
14. Performs essential duties of Director of Pharmacy in their absence. Performs staff pharmacist duties as needed.
15. Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
1. Education: PharmD from an ACPE-accredited institution required. Completion of a PGY1 residency preferred.
2. Licensure: Licensed as a Pharmacist by the State of California Board of Pharmacy required. New hires have two (2) years to obtain a Pharmacist license issued by the State of California Board of Pharmacy.
3. Experience: Five (5) years of experience in a hospital pharmacy environment or completion of a PGY1 residency required. Previous experience in managing, developing, coordinating and implementing pharmacy delivery and documentation systems preferred. Experience and/or training in use of pharmacy information systems such as Meditech or Epic preferred. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Experience in managing projects and teams.
