Department Public Works/Engineering Type of Position Full-time Salary/Pay Rate Deadline to Apply ongoing MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree with major work in civil engineering or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
REQUIREMENTS Must pass a criminal background investigation, pre-employment physical, and drug test.
NATURE OF WORK PERFORMED Work of this class involves applying engineering knowledge and skills to the management, administration and design in the overall execution of assigned projects. Position works in coordination with other sections of the Bureau of Engineering, City Bureaus and Departments in the performance of its duties. Position requires the use of independent judgment in the planning of the project and making technical evaluations.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED Supervises various engineering and capital projects as assigned by the Chief Engineer, including construction, inspection, preparation of estimates, calculation of assessments, and the attending public hearings relative to the projects; prepares specifications and construction plans (using Auto CAD) for various Public Works projects; answers questions and responds to complaints from the public; supervises and maintains necessary records and reports required in the performance of the duties; reviews subdivision and site development plans, provides comments, and attends Planning Commission meetings; works with engineering consultants to review and coordinate design work; performs a wide variety of other engineering functions as may be necessary.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Good knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering as applied to the development and construction of roads, utilities, wastewater treatment, and water filtration projects; ability to plan projects and prepare related designs (using Auto CAD), estimates and specifications; ability to maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to organize technical material in good report form; must possess good engineering judgment; civil engineering field experience relative to the municipal type projects such as water, sewer, wastewater treatment, water filtration, streets, erosion control, buildings, etc.; ability to prepare permit applications for County, State, and Federal permits including NPDES, HOP, E&S, etc.
