Children's Emergency Services Nurse Leader

Children's Emergency Services (CES) is a primary entry point for children 0-20 years of age admitted to C.S. Mott Children's Hospital - a verified Level One Pediatric Trauma and Children's Surgery Center by the American College of Surgeons. With 47-beds, CES serves as a tertiary facility with referrals from across the state. CES nurses partner with board-certified Pediatric Emergency Medicine faculty, pediatric residents and advanced practice providers to provide expert patient and family-centered care for over 40,000 children who present each year with injuries and illness across the range of acuity from minor to critical care. The Emergency Department provides staff nurses and nurse leaders financial support for required competency training to include ENPC, TNCC, PALS, & ACLS. In addition, obtaining professional certification (CPEN, CEN, TCRN) in emergency or trauma care is highly encouraged, and financial support is provided.

Responsibilities include assisting the Clinical Nurse Director with the planning and management of Children's Emergency Services. To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, education and research. To assist in coordinating patient care services consistent with Michigan Medicine's mission and goals. Reports directly to the CES Clinical Nurse Director. Collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel. Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over nursing and support staff as delegated by CES Clinical Nurse Director.

Personnel Management

• Plan, assign and supervise the work of CES nurses and techs.
• Participate in interviewing, selecting and orienting new CES nurses and techs.
• Participate in the counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of unit staff.
• Participate in the development, implementation and revision of individual performance plans.
• Facilitate open channels of communication with managers, peers, staff, and physicians.
• Coach and mentor charge nurses, staff nurses, techs, members of the nursing leadership team and others.
• Anticipate and respond to staff issues and concerns.
• Collaborate with Educational Nurse Coordinators to implement competency-based education.

Clinical Practice

• Maintain significant presence across all CES treatment areas rounding on patients, families and interfacing with staff to ensure patient care excellence and optimal patient flow.
• Provide ongoing clinical support to CES nursing and tech staff.

Management Of Clinical Area

• Participate in the development and implementation of CES goals and objectives. Participate in development of CES policy/procedure and standards of nursing care.
• Participate in planning and problem solving of daily CES operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.
• Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements.
• Interpret and implement the hospital and university policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies.
• Participate in the monitoring of CES payroll and commodity expenditures. Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process.
• Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.

Quality Improvement And Research

• Participate in planning, coordinating and evaluating unit quality improvement activities.
• Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff.
• Promote staff involvement in clinical research.
• Use lean management principles to optimize department operations.

Required Qualifications*

Educational Requirement

Applicant must meet ONE of the following:

• Bachelor's degree in Nursing OR Associates degree or Diploma in Nursing and Master's degree in Nursing
• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
• Minimum five (5) years experience as a Pediatric Registered Nurse.
• Minimum two (2) years recent (within the last 5 years) experience as a Registered Nurse in an Emergency Department.
• Completion of a Nurse Leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). Certifications must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC.) See full list here.
• Evidence of demonstrated or potential leadership ability, including charge nurse or team leader roles, advancement in the professional development framework, or other management experience.

• Three (3) years current experience as a Registered Nurse in a Pediatric Emergency Department.
• Masters in Nursing or related field (or in process)
• Emergency Department supervisory experience.
• Certification in Emergency Nursing (CPEN/CEN)
• Current ENPC
• Current PALS
• Current TNCC
• Current ACLS
• Computer competency including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Consultative and teaching skills
• Current practice reflects critical thinking skills needed to effectively manage patient flow, staffing resources and competing priorities to promote patient safety, patient satisfaction and staff engagement.
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, advanced organizational skills, and a strong record of working effectively with staff across disciplines in a multicultural and diverse environment
• Demonstrated flexibility related to unit staffing and patient care needs.
• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

• Primarily night shift with flexibility to cover needs of the unit and to participate in unit priority initiatives.
• Rotating on call responsibility.
