Clinical Nursing Director
The Clinical Nursing Director (CND) will plan and manage the clinical and administrative operations of a 32-bed adult pulmonary and internal medicine unit.
6C is a 32-bed unit that provides 24-hour nursing care to adult patients. 6C has six (6) step down moderate care beds which includes telemetry and stable vent patients.
Responsibilities include assuring implementation of patient care and quality assurance standards, planning, organizing, and evaluating clinical practice and educational activities, participating in planning, development, and implementation of unit policies, goals, and objectives, counseling and evaluating the performance and clinical practice of the nursing staff, identifying and resolving unit operational problems, representing the unit on assigned clinical area and hospital committees, maintaining compliance with federal and state regulations regarding safety and patient care, actively collaborating in the development of annual budgets, managing and providing variance reporting of activity, payroll, commodity, and capital budgets, participating in new program development and implementation, collaborating with the medical director to create and support an environment where cutting-edge and innovative care is provided to a continually growing number of adult medical and pulmonary patients, integrating unit goals and objectives with nursing services and health system goals and objectives, developing and implementing unit goals and objectives which include the establishment of standards of practice in patient care consisting of national professional and regulatory guidelines, formulating professional goals and preparing a written evaluation for the clinician director, initiating and cooperating in applied research in health care in keeping with the institutional objectives of maintaining prominence in developing new modes of clinical practice, establishing guidelines with the nursing faculty, which support the institutional goal of providing the primary clinical environment for nursing students, facilitating, coordinating, and monitoring the clinical experience of nursing and other students, participating in concurrent and retrospective evaluation of patient care consistent with the hospital quality assurance program, integrating unit goals and objectives with nursing service goals and objectives, advising and assisting with the establishment of priorities and institutional program development, working closely with the medical staff and other disciplines for the successful implementation of patient, unit, and institutional objectives, assisting in the resolution of interdisciplinary operating problems, supervising operations of the unit, establishing minimum/maximum staffing patterns to ensure quality patient care, initiating and implementing a staffing schedule which is consistent with care requirements and responds to varying patient activity and patient mix, identifying and recommending specific staffing needs and position qualifications consistent with the respective unit objectives and patient case mix, interviewing and selecting qualified personnel, evaluating performance of nursing staff responsible for patient care unit, making recommendations for merit awards and personnel classification changes, counseling and disciplining nursing staff to enable achievement of unit and institutional objectives, particularly as related to high-quality patient care, interpreting and implementing university and hospital personnel policies and programs and ensuring their uniform and correct application, projecting and monitoring personnel budget for patient care unit, providing information regarding budget variances to the associate chief nursing officer, collaborating and coordinating with other disciplines to plan, evaluate, and implement the commodity budget for the patient care unit, initiating and implementing in-service guidelines for unit level orientation and staff development, encouraging and providing opportunities for continuing education of the nursing staff, initiating, planning, analyzing, and participating in nursing staff development programs and workshops.
Required Qualifications
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
- Master's degree in Nursing or Health Care Administration, Public Health, Business or related field (a Juris Doctor degree may be considered). If Master's degree is not in Nursing, a Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required.
- Two (2) years recent leadership experience, to include demonstrated leadership, management, communication, counseling, problem solving, decision making, conflict resolution and group process skills
- Minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience with demonstration of progressive clinical competence
- Nurse Leadership certification or completion of a nursing leadership certification within one (1) year of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nursing Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). Desired Qualifications
- Two (2) years recent supervisory experience in an Adult Medical/ Surgical inpatient setting; preferably in a tertiary care setting
- Minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience with demonstration of progressive clinical competence in an Adult Medical/ Surgical inpatient setting
- Interest-based problem solving and negotiations.
- Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a manner that fosters teambuilding and to provide visionary direction for team members.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with administrators, physicians, peers, and subordinates.
- Experience with change management process.
