MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Four years of experience in automotive repair work; or Vocational/technical training in automotive repair can substitute at the rate of 720 classroom hours for a maximum of one year of the required experience. Note: All positions within this class require possession of a valid driver license.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent of this position is subject to pre-employment, post accident, random and reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing, and the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse query requirements of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations, Title 49, Part 382 CFR. Successful completion of a drug test is a condition of employment in the position in accordance with Section 112.0455 F.S. "Drug Test" means any chemical, biological or physical instrumental analysis administered for the purpose of determining the presence or absence of a drug or its metabolites. The incumbent must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) within six (6) months of appointment. The Florida Forest Service will cover the majority of the cost associated with attaining the required CDL training and the initial CDL test when administered at an agency authorized CDL training center. Successful applicant will be subject to pre-employment and annual queries through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA) Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. Occasional to moderate travel required. Position may respond to emergencies, including natural disasters or other type incidents requiring travel, as needed.

JOB DUTIES

Responsible for directing the overall equipment maintenance and repair program within the Tallahassee Forestry Center of the Florida Forest Service (FFS), and for supporting the statewide maintenance and repair of equipment for the FFS, by planning, organizing, prioritizing and assigning work to inspect, maintain, repair, fabricate, modify, cannibalize test, assess and recommend for acquisition, disposal or continued operation the units of automotive, agricultural, firefighting, emergency response and heavy construction equipment assigned to a FFS field unit. Items of equipment likely to be included are: gasoline and diesel vans, sedans, pickup trucks, transport trucks, school buses, bucket trucks, other medium and heavy trucks; light, medium and heavy cranes; pile drivers; farm tractors, agricultural implements and tree shakers. Formulates policies and procedures pertaining to accounting and movement of parts, materials, fuels and lubricant inventories at the local level, provides budget information to center/district manager on shop operations costs, equipment repair and operating costs, fuel costs, cost of materials and supplies for fabrication, etc. Assists Operations/Maintenance Administrator with statewide development and implementation of policies, procedures and standards for equipment operation and maintenance, scoping of equipment research and development plans. Interface with intra-district supervisory personnel (Center/District manager, Forest Area Supervisors, Program Administrators, etc.) to discuss costs, priority changes and status of major equipment repairs and overhauls (out-of-body engine work, transmission rebuilds, heavy equipment tear downs, etc.). Consults with mechanics on diagnosis of major component problems, planning of major tear downs/overhauls, assessment of recurring operating problems and conditions affecting operating safety. Manages equipment repair shop operations, including oversight of parts, materials, supplies, fuels and lubricants purchasing, inventory, record keeping, reporting and security; welding and fabrication; vehicle and equipment safety inspections; processing of equipment records; parts/component sourcing and price comparisons; continual audit of shop operations for compliance with department procedures, environment requirements, optimum shop safety, and maximum economy and efficiency of operations. Performs other related duties as assigned. Responsible and accountable for managing budget/dollars/resources (staff, vehicles, computers, cell phones, etc.) of any assigned programs in an efficient and accountable manner. Responsible for ensuring that assigned program areas have operational procedures and processes which result in accountability and compliance with FFS and department policies and procedures.
