Phlebotomist

Duration: 11 Months Location: Providence, RI Schedule: Estimated that the schedule may be 3 days per week at 5 hours per day. Weekly schedules may vary based on study needs and will be determined in collaboration with the study supervisor. Hours: Part Time; 15 hours per week

Position Overview: The Phlebotomist will provide phlebotomy, biological sample processing, laboratory technician, and participant-facing research support for clinical research studies involving substance use. The primary functions of this position are to collect blood and other biological samples from research participants. They will be responsible for labeling, processing, and storing biological samples within the laboratory. They will conduct some assays within the laboratory, ship some samples to external laboratories for assays, and transport some samples to local biological repositories for long-term storage. In addition, the position may support participant recruitment, screen potential participants for study eligibility, and facilitate the informed consent process in accordance with approved study protocols. This position handles privileged information.

Position Responsibilities: In addition to collecting blood and other biological samples from research participants, the position requires a skilled individual to work directly, in-person, with individuals participating in research studies investigating the relationships between substance use and disease risk. Research protocols involve project oversight by the NIH and other regulatory agencies (DEA, FDA). The position will involve exposure to potentially infectious body fluids, including blood products, and must complete Brown-approved safety training regarding these materials.

  • Will need their own vehicle to transport samples to community partner sites in the area as well as Miriam Hospital.
  • They will be reimbursed for mileage.
  • Study-specific orientation and training will be provided prior to beginning participant-facing activities.

Business Need / Justification: Temporary phlebotomy support is needed for the RISE-NE research study to support participant study visits and biospecimen collection. The worker will primarily perform venipuncture/blood collection and support the proper handling, labeling, and preparation of specimens in accordance with study procedures.

Required Experience: Experience performing venipuncture/phlebotomy and collecting blood specimens in a clinical, laboratory, research, or similar setting. Experience working directly with patients or research participants preferred.

Years of Experience: At least 1 year of relevant phlebotomy/venipuncture experience preferred.

Education Requirements: Minimum Education Requirement: High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of a phlebotomy training/certification program preferred.

Tools / Technical Skills: Standard phlebotomy and blood collection supplies/equipment, including:

  • Venipuncture needles
  • Blood collection tubes
  • Tourniquets
  • Related specimen collection materials

Familiarity with specimen labeling, handling, and basic laboratory safety procedures.
