Controller

Berenson Cancer Center is one of the only outpatient medical clinics devoted exclusively to multiple myeloma cancer treatment and research. Lead by world-renowned oncologist and researcher, James R. Berenson, MD., Berenson Oncology is a pioneer in creating cutting-edge treatments for patients with myeloma and associated blood cancers. This clinic is affiliated with the Institute for Myeloma & Bone Cancer Research, Oncotherapeutics and OncoTracker and is located near Beverly Hills in the Sunset Medical Tower in West Hollywood, California, USA.

Controller Responsibilities

The Controller is responsible for leading the accounting function across multiple entities, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, strong internal controls, effective cash management, and meaningful financial support for management decision-making. This is a hands-on leadership role that requires sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to identify issues, improve processes, and maintain financial discipline as business needs evolve.

Leadership & Oversight

  • Serve as the primary accounting resource for management and coordinate closely with operations, clinic personnel, the outside CPA firm, auditors, payroll providers, financial institutions, and other advisors.
  • Provide accounting leadership and oversight to ensure accurate financial reporting, regulatory compliance, timely tax and year-end requirements, and complete, well-organized financial records.
  • Establish clear accounting priorities, maintain accountability for key deadlines, and ensure the accounting function effectively supports the organization's operational and strategic objectives.

Financial Accounting & Reporting

  • Own the monthly and annual close processes, ensuring journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, adjustments, and supporting documentation are accurate, complete, and prepared for management review on schedule.
  • Maintain the general ledgers and oversee the complete accounting cycle for four separate companies.
  • Prepare, review, and analyze monthly and annual financial statements and reporting packages, including balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, variance reporting, and clear explanations of financial results for management.
  • Analyze financial results to identify trends, variances, inconsistencies, errors, and potential areas of concern, and provide forward-looking insights and recommendations to management.
  • Review invoices, accruals, merchant deposits, bank activity, intercompany balances, vendor accounts, and other balance sheet accounts to identify and resolve discrepancies.
  • Ensure transactions are recorded in the appropriate accounting period, properly classified, and supported by adequate documentation.
  • Evaluate and update the chart of accounts, reporting structures, classifications, and accounting workflows as business operations, revenue sources, expenses, and management reporting needs evolve.

Financial Planning, Cash Management & Analysis

  • Monitor daily cash position, upcoming obligations, liquidity requirements, and cash-flow timing to maintain adequate working capital and support uninterrupted operations.
  • Proactively identify potential cash shortages, liquidity constraints, or other financial risks and communicate them to the CEO before they impact operations.
  • Lead the budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and scenario analysis processes.
  • Perform actual-to-budget and actual-to-forecast variance analysis and provide meaningful insights for monthly financial review meetings.
  • Support management with financial analysis, projections, and recommendations to facilitate informed business decisions.

Accounting Operations & Internal Controls

  • Own and maintain effective internal controls over accounting processes and transactions, ensuring financial activity is accurate, properly authorized, adequately supported, and appropriately recorded.
  • Identify control weaknesses and process deficiencies, implement corrective actions, and continuously strengthen accounting procedures as the organization grows.
  • Ensure accounting practices comply with applicable accounting standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop, maintain, and periodically update accounting policies, standard operating procedures, and process documentation to promote consistency, accountability, and scalability.
  • Continuously evaluate accounting processes for opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, automation, and financial controls.

Ownership, Problem Solving & Business Judgment

  • Exercise sound financial and business judgment by identifying gaps, anticipating accounting and operational issues, and addressing problems proactively.
  • Take ownership of responsibilities and deliverables without requiring constant direction or oversight.
  • Investigate and resolve issues thoroughly, determine root causes, and implement practical solutions that prevent recurring problems.
  • Maintain a high standard of accountability for deadlines, accuracy, confidentiality, organization, and quality of work.
  • Adapt accounting processes, priorities, and reporting to support changing business needs while maintaining appropriate financial discipline and control.

Best-in-Class Benefits and Culture:

We value our employees' time and efforts. Our commitment to your success is enhanced by a competitive compensation of $120,000 - $125,000 depending on experience, and an extensive benefits package including:

  • Comprehensive health coverage: Medical, dental, and vision insurance provided
  • Robust retirement planning: 401(k) plan available with employer matching
  • Financial security: Life and disability insurance for added protection
  • Flexible financial options: Health savings and flexible spending accounts offered
  • Well-being and work-life balance: Paid time off, flexible schedule, and remote work choices provided

Plus, we work to maintain the best environment for our employees, where people can learn and grow with the company. We strive to provide a collaborative, creative environment where everyone feels encouraged to contribute to our processes, decisions, planning, and culture.

To thrive/succeed as the Controller, you should have:

  • Minimum 5 years of Controller experience in a small to mid-sized organization with responsibility for the full accounting cycle and financial statement preparation.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field required; CPA or master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on QuickBooks Online experience, with demonstrated ability to improve accounting systems, processes, workflows, internal controls, and financial data efficiency using Excel, Google Sheets, and other related tools.
  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting, accrual accounting, cash flow management, budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and reconciliations.
  • Experience working with CPA firms, auditors, payroll providers, banks, and financial institutions.
  • Experience implementing AI solutions.
